Yellowing of Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

The cleaning of yellowed office chairs requires selecting appropriate cleaning agents and methods based on different materials, as detailed below:

Fabric Office Chairs: Yellowing is often caused by stain penetration or oxidation. Prepare a dilute solution of mild laundry detergent and warm water, dip a soft-bristled brush into it, and gently scrub the yellowed areas. Then, repeatedly wipe with a damp, wrung-out towel and let it air-dry in a well-ventilated area. This method effectively removes stains without damaging the fabric.

Leather Office Chairs: When yellowed, avoid using alcohol or strong acid/alkali cleaners, as these can corrode the leather surface. Diluted soapy water or specialized leather cleaners are more suitable. Dip a clean, soft cloth into the solution and gently wipe. After wiping, promptly apply a layer of leather conditioner to protect the leather and restore its luster. Alternatively, first wipe away surface dust with a slightly damp cotton cloth. For stubborn oil stains, use a neutral cleaner to massage in a circular motion, then apply a layer of leather conditioner. For models with lumbar supports, use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clean debris from the creases, but be mindful of the alcohol amount to avoid damaging the leather.

Plastic or Rubber Office Chairs: Yellowing is often due to long-term exposure to air and oxidation. Mix baking soda with warm water to form a paste, apply it to the yellowed areas, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Alternatively, wipe with a mixture of white vinegar and warm water (1:2 ratio). Both methods effectively remove the oxidized layer and restore the chair's original color.

Wooden Office Chairs with Coatings: For chairs with wooden frames and fabric seats, gently wipe with a damp cloth dampened with a small amount of mild detergent, then dry with a cloth. Avoid excessive soaking to prevent mold and deformation of the wood. For locally yellowed solid wood chairs with a clear varnish finish, apply a matching wood wax oil after cleaning to protect the wood and restore its color.

White Office Chairs: Gently rub with toothpaste. Squeeze a small amount onto a soft cloth and lightly wipe the yellowed areas, but use toothpaste only once and avoid applying excessive force to prevent surface damage. Alternatively, use furniture cleaning wax containing soft abrasives. Dip a small sponge into it and gently wipe the chair once a month to maintain its whiteness. Lightly apply some petroleum jelly to the yellowed areas, but use it sparingly to avoid a greasy feel. If you have ashes or unburned matches at home, you can also gently brush away yellow stains with a soft brush, but be gentle to avoid scratching the surface.
