Office Chair Won't Rise After Lowering

Admin October 08, 2026

The common reasons why an office chair won't rise after being lowered are the aging and pressure loss of the gas cylinder, wear and tear of the sealing ring causing air leakage, the adjustment lever getting stuck on the valve, or deformation of the chassis mechanism. Among these, damage to the gas cylinder is the most prevalent, which can be resolved through replacement or temporary fixation.

Core Cause Analysis

  1. Aging and Pressure Loss of the Gas Cylinder
The gas cylinder is the core component for the height adjustment of an office chair. It is filled with high-pressure gas and relies on the sealing ring to maintain stable pressure. Repeated raising and lowering over a long period can cause the sealing ring to gradually age, resulting in tiny cracks or deformations that allow the high-pressure gas to slowly leak out. When the pressure drops below the threshold required to support a person's weight, the chair will no longer be able to rise. This is the most common type of problem.

  2. Wear and Tear of the Sealing Ring Causing Air Leakage
As the key sealing part of the gas cylinder, the sealing ring can accelerate wear and tear if the chair is used in a humid environment, accumulates dust, or is frequently adjusted, directly leading to air leakage. In the early stages of air leakage, the chair may show a slower raising and lowering speed, eventually losing its height adjustment function completely.

  3. Adjustment Lever Getting Stuck on the Valve
For some office chairs, the height adjustment lever locks the chair in place by pressing against the valve of the gas cylinder. If the lever remains in a tightened state for a long time (due to misoperation or design flaws), the valve may not be able to reset, preventing gas from entering the gas cylinder and thus preventing the chair from rising.

  4. Deformation of the Chassis Mechanism
The chassis is the structural part that connects the gas cylinder to the seat. If it becomes deformed due to external impact (such as being pressed by a heavy object) or long-term use, it may compress the gas cylinder or hinder its normal expansion and contraction, indirectly causing height adjustment failures.

Solutions

  1. Replace the Gas Cylinder
If it is confirmed that the gas cylinder is damaged, you can replace it yourself:
  • Steps: Step on the bottom of the chair and shake it to remove the old gas cylinder. Tap the circular part around the gas cylinder to detach it from the base. Purchase a new gas cylinder of the matching size (the price is approximately 30 - 230 yuan). First, install it onto the base and then put on the seat. Sit on the chair to press it firmly in place.
  • Note: Choose a model that matches the diameter and stroke of the original gas cylinder to avoid unstable installation or an inconsistent height adjustment range.
  1. Temporarily Fix the Height
If you cannot replace the gas cylinder immediately, you can use a hose clamp or PVC pipe for fixation:
  • Method: Place the hose clamp or PVC pipe around the outside of the gas cylinder, adjust it to the desired height, and then tighten it to restrict the expansion and contraction of the gas cylinder through physical compression.
  • Limitation: This method can only fix the height and cannot restore the height adjustment function. It may also affect the appearance of the chair.
  1. Check the Adjustment Lever and Chassis
If the gas cylinder is not damaged, check whether the adjustment lever is stuck on the valve:
  • Operation: Press the adjustment lever repeatedly and observe whether you can hear the sound of gas flow or whether the chair rises and lowers slightly. If the chassis is deformed, contact a professional repair person for adjustment or replacement.
