Office Chair Won't Lower

Admin October 10, 2026

If your office chair won't lower, you can troubleshoot and resolve the issue by following these steps:

1. Check if the gas lift is damaged
The gas lift is the core component for adjusting the height of an office chair. If it's damaged, the chair won't lower. How to tell: Try pressing the height adjustment lever. If there's no response at all or the lifting is severely stuck, the gas lift might be faulty. How to handle: You need to replace it with a new gas lift, but note the following:

  • Make sure the size and specifications of the new gas lift match the original part to avoid secondary damage due to improper installation.
  • Non-professionals attempting to replace it themselves face the risk of high-pressure gas explosions. It's recommended to contact after-sales service or a professional repair person. If you choose to do it yourself, turn the chair upside down, spray lubricant on the metal connections between the gas lift, the seat, and the five-star base. Use a rubber mallet to tap the connections to create vibrations, or use a pipe wrench to carefully rotate the gas lift to loosen it. If that doesn't work, use a hammer to tap the edge of the connection to push it out. Use the same method to separate the five-star base. Then install the new gas lift. You can also step on the bottom of the chair with both feet and shake it to bring up the stuck part of the gas lift. Use a wrench or hammer to tap around the circular part of the gas lift to knock it out. Buy a suitable gas lift online and install it. First, attach it to the base, then put the seat on it, and sit on it to press it tightly.

2. Clean the chair
Dust or debris may clog the gas lift or the base adjustment valve, affecting the height adjustment function. How to handle:

  • Use a vacuum cleaner or a clean soft cloth to wipe the surface and crevices of the chair, focusing on cleaning the area around the gas lift.
  • Avoid using corrosive cleaners to prevent damage to the component materials.

3. Check for air leaks
If the seal of the gas lift is damaged, internal gas leakage will cause the height adjustment to fail. How to tell:

  • Observe if there are oil stains or abnormal sounds (such as a hissing sound) on the surface of the gas lift.
  • When pressing the adjustment lever, if the chair slowly sinks or can't maintain its height, there may be an air leak.
How to handle: Find the leak point and repair it, or directly replace the gas lift.

4. Replace the seal ring
Long-term use may cause the seal ring to wear out or age, leading to air leaks or sticking. How to handle:

  • Disassemble the chair base and find the seal ring at the connection between the gas lift and the base.
  • Replace it with a new seal ring of the same specification, ensuring it's installed properly without wrinkles.

5. Other troubleshooting items

  • Base adjustment valve: Check if it's stuck by foreign objects or damaged. Clean the foreign objects or replace the valve.
  • Connecting screws: Check if the screws and bolts between the seat and the base are loose. Tighten them with tools.
  • Installation issues: Confirm if the seat is installed correctly (especially for detachable types) and readjust its position.
  • Misoperation: Check if you've mistakenly used the rotation adjustment knob as the height adjustment switch. Operate it correctly.
  • Temporary lubrication: If the height adjustment is slightly stuck, apply a small amount of silicone-based grease to the exposed part of the gas lift's telescopic rod to relieve the sticking caused by rust or debris.

If none of the above methods work, it's advisable to contact a professional repair person to avoid safety hazards or further damage due to improper operation.
