Office Chair Won't Descend

Admin October 16, 2026

If your office chair won't descend, first check if the gas lift is damaged. If it is, replace it with a new one of the correct size and specifications. If the gas lift is fine, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

  1. Clean the Chair
    Use a vacuum cleaner or a clean, soft cloth to wipe the surface and crevices of the chair, removing dust and debris. Accumulated debris may block the lifting mechanism or affect the seal of the gas lift, causing abnormal lifting function.

  2. Check for Air Leaks
    If the gas lift has an air leak, it will result in insufficient pressure and prevent the chair from lifting. You can check for leaks in the following ways:

  • Observe if there are any oil stains or unusual noises (such as a hissing sound when there is a leak) on the surface of the gas lift;
  • Apply soapy water to theไผธ็ผฉ (telescoping) part of the gas lift. If bubbles appear, it indicates a leak, and you should contact a professional to repair or replace the seals.
  1. Replace the Seal Ring
    After long-term use, the seal ring inside the gas lift may wear out or age, leading to air leakage or lifting jamming. You need to disassemble the chair base, locate the seal ring at the connection between the gas lift and the base, and replace it with a new one of the same specification. Non-professionals are advised to have this done by a repair technician to avoid the risk of high-pressure gas spraying out.

  2. Troubleshoot Operation and Jamming Issues

    • Operation Method: Confirm that you are using the lifting lever correctly (usually located on the right or left side under the seat). The correct operation requires pulling the lever while sitting, not while standing or with no load on the chair.
    • Loose Connections: Turn the chair upside down and check if the screws and bolts at the connections between the seat and the base, as well as the five-star foot, are loose. Tighten all fasteners with the appropriate tools to prevent lifting obstruction due to component displacement.
    • Foreign Object Jamming: Remove the seat bottom plate and observe if there are any oil leaks or foreign objects such as threads or dust at the connection between the gas lift and the adjustment valve. Clean the adjustment mechanism with a cotton swab to ensure smooth movement of the moving parts.
    • Lubrication: If the lifting is slightly jammed, you can apply a small amount of silicone-based grease to the exposed part of the telescoping rod of the gas lift. Avoid using ordinary lubricating oil to prevent corrosion of the seals.

If none of the above methods work, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to check for internal structural issues or control valve failures in the gas lift. Disassembling the gas lift yourself carries the risk of high-pressure gas explosion, so non-professionals must exercise caution.
