Office Chair Wobbling

Admin October 19, 2026

The wobbling of an office chair to the left or right may be caused by loose screws, issues with the gas lift cylinder, deformation or wear of the base or components, wear of the nylon slide or plastic clip, problems with the casters, or material issues, requiring targeted repairs.

  1. Loose Screws
Prolonged use may cause the screws connecting the seat cushion to the tray and the tray to the five-star base to loosen. Repair Method: Squat down to inspect the connections at the five-star base and chassis. Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the loose screws counterclockwise, spray a small amount of WD40 around the screw holes for lubrication and rust removal, and then tighten them clockwise. If the screw holes become enlarged, use a toothpick or thin wooden stick dipped in white glue to insert into the holes, and reinsert the screws after the glue dries.

  2. Gas Lift Cylinder Issues

    • Wear or Leakage: If the chair rotates with difficulty, the height adjustment is not smooth, or the connection between the seat and the base is loose with black oil stains on the cylinder (indicating a leaking seal), it may be due to wear of the gas lift cylinder or base components. Repair Method: Replace the gas lift cylinder (costs about $19). Spray WD40 on the connections, let it sit for 1 minute, then use a hairdryer on the hot air setting to soften the metal parts. Use a heavy-duty pipe wrench to grip the gas lift cylinder and rotate it counterclockwise to remove the old cylinder. Clean the mounting hole in the base, insert the new cylinder, and tap it gently with a hammer to secure it.
    • Connection Issues: If the metal clip or plastic sleeve at the connection between the gas lift cylinder and the tray is worn or loose. Repair Method: Purchase the corresponding replacement parts online or contact the manufacturer.
  3. Base Deformation or Component Wear
Remove the bottom cover to inspect whether the plastic clips are brittle and broken or if the caster axles are misaligned. Repair Method: Use pliers to reposition loose clips; if the plastic parts are shattered or the casters are severely misaligned, replace the entire chassis assembly with a compatible model.

  4. Wear of Nylon Slide or Plastic Clip
The nylon slide or fixed plastic clip inside the tray that controls the tilt angle may become white and brittle after prolonged friction, leading to increased clearance. Repair Method: Purchase the corresponding replacement parts online or contact the manufacturer.

  5. Caster Issues
Hair entanglement or the wheels being suspended in the air may cause wobbling. Repair Method: Clean the casters and ensure the wheels are in proper contact with the ground.

  6. Material Issues
If the user weighs over 100 kilograms or uses a cheap chair costing two to three hundred yuan, the wobbling may be due to insufficient material strength. Recommendation: Replace the chair with one that has a higher weight capacity.

Preparation Before Repair: Cross/flat-head screwdrivers, adjustable wrench, hammer, pliers, white glue, WD40, 1.2-centimeter-wide thick rubber band (to replace aging straps). Move the chair to a flat, open area, place an old cloth underneath to prevent scratching the floor, and secure the casters to prevent sliding. If the chair has a power supply (such as an electric height-adjustable model), be sure to unplug it first. Note: If the gas lift cylinder is leaking, the height adjustment is stuck, or there are abnormal noises, do not forcibly disassemble or strike it. Poor-quality gas lift cylinders may burst, so it is recommended to replace them directly.
