Office Chair Wobbling

Admin October 16, 2026

Office chair wobbling can be caused by various reasons. Here are the common causes and corresponding repair methods:

  1. Loose screws or bolts at connections This is the most common cause, especially for modern panel furniture chairs. You can turn the chair upside down or lay it on its side, carefully inspect all the screws at the connections between the chair legs, cross braces, and seat surface, and use an appropriate screwdriver or wrench to tighten each loose screw one by one. Be careful not to overtighten to avoid stripping the threads.

  2. Worn screw holes If the chair still wobbles after tightening the screws, it means the screw holes are worn and the screws can't grip properly. In this case, you can dip a toothpick or a thin wooden stick in white wood glue and stuff it into the screw hole to fill it up. After the glue dries, reinsert the screw. The dried white wood glue will enhance the screw's grip.

  3. Uneven chair leg lengths One leg may be slightly shorter than the others, causing the chair to wobble. Measure the distance from the bottom of the shortest leg to the ground and hammer a furniture nail into the bottom of the chair leg. Furniture nails are small, with a thickness of about 0.32 to 0.64 centimeters, and can effectively adjust the height of the chair leg.

  4. Worn chair joints After weeks, months, or even years of use, the chair joints may wear out due to temperature, humidity, and lifespan. For old-fashioned wooden chairs with mortise-and-tenon joints, first carefully clean off the old glue from the loose tenon. Then evenly apply white wood glue to the tenon and mortise, forcefully knock the tenon back into place, and use clamps or ropes to secure the connection tightly. Let it sit for 24 hours for the glue to dry completely. Wood glue wear over time is a common issue and requires regular inspection and repair.

  5. Chair design characteristics Some chairs may wobble due to design reasons. For example, there may be gaps at the screw connections of accessories, and if the chair has height adjustment and reclining functions, to ensure flexibility, these gaps can't be completely sealed. Or the chair may have a rocking function, allowing for a small amount of rocking for comfort during long sitting sessions. Additionally, if the chair has universal wheels, you may feel a slight wobble when sitting on it. Such wobbling is normal and doesn't require repair.

  6. Installation issues If the wobbling is obvious, recheck the fixing screws of the backrest and the base to see if a loose screw is causing the problem. If so, tighten the screw. If the seat tilts forward, check if the base is installed backward. Sitting on the chair and having the lever for height adjustment on the right side is correct. If it's on the left, the base is installed backward, causing the forward tilt. Installation errors are common problems, and you need to carefully check the installation instructions.

  7. Damaged or missing parts Damaged or missing parts may cause the chair to wobble. Check and replace the damaged parts. Missing or damaged parts will directly affect the stability of the chair.

  8. Uneven floor An uneven floor can prevent the four legs of the chair from touching the ground simultaneously, causing wobbling when sitting. You can use adjustable foot pads or corner brackets and other accessories to solve this problem. Adjustable foot pads can adjust the height of the chair according to the floor conditions to ensure that all four legs are firmly on the ground.
