Office Chair Wobbling

Admin October 16, 2026

Office chair wobbling can be caused by various factors. Here are the common causes and corresponding solutions:

Gaps at the Screw Connections of Components

Chairs are assembled from various components, and it is normal for there to be gaps at the screw connections. Moreover, chairs with height-adjustable and reclining functions need to maintain flexibility, so the gaps cannot be completely sealed, which can lead to some wobbling. This is generally within the scope of normal design, and no special treatment is required if the wobbling amplitude is acceptable.

With Rocking Function

If the chair has a rocking function, it can rock slightly, which is convenient for resting after sitting for a long time. At the same time, the chair is equipped with casters for rotation, and there may be a slight wobble when sitting on it. This is a normal phenomenon brought about by the chair's functional characteristics, and no treatment is required if it does not affect normal use.

Loose Screws

  • Check the screws at key parts: When the wobbling is obvious, re-check the fixing screws of the backrest and the base to see if any screws are loose. Common areas of wobbling and looseness in office chairs are concentrated on the five-star base and its connecting screws, the connection between the seat and the gas lift, and the connection between the armrests and the backrest. Loose screws in these areas can cause wobbling.
  • Tighten the screws: Use tools of the appropriate specifications to check the screws at each connection one by one. If any are found to be loose, tighten them promptly.

Base Installation Issues

If the seat leans forward, it may be due to incorrect installation of the base. When sitting on the chair, the lever for adjusting the height and tilt should be on the right side. If it is on the left side, it means the base is installed backward, causing the forward tilt. In this case, the base needs to be reinstalled correctly.

Gas Lift Problems

Aging of the gas lift or failure of its internal seals can not only affect height adjustment but also lead to instability of the chair body. In this case, a new gas lift needs to be replaced.

Material Fatigue

Plastic components are prone to embrittlement and fracture due to the influence of temperature and humidity. Damage to the seals of the gas lift can cause height adjustment failure and introduce wobbling. The embrittled and fractured plastic components and damaged seals of the gas lift need to be replaced.

Improper Assembly

For some inexpensive chairs or those with unclear assembly instructions, if users do not ensure uniform tightening of the bolts during self-assembly, the chair may be unbalanced in multiple places and wobble. In this case, the bolts need to be uniformly tightened again according to the correct assembly instructions.

Environmental Factors

If the office chair is placed on an uneven or damp floor for a long time, the base of the chair cannot fully fit the ground, exacerbating the wobbling sensation. An uneven floor can also cause excessive local stress and accelerate component damage. The chair should be placed on a flat and dry floor.
