Severe Wobbling of Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

Severe wobbling of an office chair may be caused by issues such as a damaged hydraulic rod, loose screws, problems with the casters, excessive user weight, or poor chair material quality, and can be resolved through targeted inspection and repair.

1. Damaged Hydraulic Rod
The hydraulic rod is the core component supporting the seat's up-and-down movement. If damaged, it will directly cause wobbling. Common signs include looseness at the connection between the seat and the base, and jerky or unsmooth movement during lifting. If there are black oil stains on the rod's surface, it indicates that the seal is leaking air, leading to an imbalance in internal pressure. The typical lifespan of a hydraulic rod is 3-5 years. If the chair has been in use for more than five years, it is advisable to replace the hydraulic rod directly to avoid safety hazards caused by aging.

2. Loose Screws
Loose screws at connection points such as the five-star base and chassis are a common cause of wobbling. Squat down to observe the bottom of the chair, focusing on checking whether the fixing screws between the five-star base and the chassis, and the connecting screws between the seat and the hydraulic rod are loose. Use a screwdriver to tighten them one by one. If the screws are stripped or damaged, replace them with screws of the same specification. Regularly checking the tightness of the screws can prevent such problems.

3. Caster Problems
Wobbling can occur if the casters are entangled with foreign objects (such as hair or fibers) or if the wheels are suspended (due to an uneven floor). Check each caster to ensure it rotates smoothly and remove any entangled objects. If a wheel is damaged, replace it with a new one. Additionally, ensure that the chair is placed on a flat surface to avoid partial suspension caused by floor irregularities.

4. Excessive User Weight or Poor Material Quality
If the user weighs more than 100 kilograms, it may exceed the chair's designed weight capacity, leading to structural deformation or component damage. In this case, it is necessary to replace the office chair with one that has a higher weight capacity. If the chair is made of poor-quality materials (such as thin and brittle plastic parts or insufficiently strong metal parts), long-term use may also cause deformation and wobbling, requiring replacement with a higher-quality chair.

Maintenance Advice: Prioritize inspecting the hydraulic rod, screws, and casters. Following this order can help quickly identify the problem. If you find it difficult to handle the issue yourself, it is recommended to contact a professional maintenance technician or the chair manufacturer's after-sales service. Avoid violent lifting or wobbling of the chair during daily use to extend its lifespan.
