Office Chair Wobbling Base

Admin October 10, 2026

Common causes and solutions for a wobbling base of an office chair are as follows:

1. Loose screws
Loose screws connecting the base to the gas lift, seat cushion, or armrests are a common cause of wobbling. Focus on checking the screws on the inside of the armrests, the bottom of the seat cushion, and the connection points between the base and the gas lift. If any are loose, use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the screws counterclockwise, spray a small amount of WD40 around the screw holes for lubrication and rust removal, and then tighten them clockwise. If the screw holes have become enlarged due to long-term use, take a toothpick or a thin wooden stick, dip it in white glue, and insert it into the hole. After the glue dries, reinsert the screw to enhance the fixing effect.

2. Gas lift issues
Wear or air leakage in the gas lift can cause the base to have difficulty in lifting and lowering, as well as stuttering during rotation, leading to wobbling. When checking, rotate the chair to observe if there is any stuttering and try to adjust the lifting function. If a faulty gas lift is confirmed, it can be replaced with a new one (costing about 19 yuan). The steps are as follows: Spray WD40 on the connection between the gas lift and the base and let it sit for 1 minute; use a hairdryer on the hot air setting to heat the connection area; use a heavy-duty pipe wrench to grip the gas lift, rotate it counterclockwise, and pull out the old lift with force; clean the installation hole in the base, insert the new gas lift vertically, and tap it gently with a hammer to secure it.

3. Base deformation or component wear
Remove the bottom cover and check if the plastic clips are brittle and broken or if the wheel axles are misaligned. If the clips are loose, use pliers to reset them; if the plastic parts are shattered or the wheels are severely tilted, replace them with the same model of base components. In addition, long-term weight-bearing on the base may cause the metal frame to deform, requiring tools to adjust the frame angle or replace the base with a new one.

4. Wobbling due to normal functionality
When designing office chairs, a certain gap is left at the connection points of the accessories to ensure flexibility, and the lifting and reclining functions are achieved through these gaps. Therefore, slight wobbling is a normal phenomenon. If the chair has a rocking function (a design for slight wobbling) or the casters rotate flexibly, a slight wobbling sensation will be felt when sitting on it, and no special treatment is required.

Precautions: Before operating, turn off the lifting function of the chair and ensure that the chair is placed stably; if you are not familiar with disassembly, it is recommended to contact a professional repair person or refer to the product manual.
