Office Chair Wobble Welding Repair

Admin October 16, 2026

If an office chair wobbles due to welding issues at the joints, it can be repaired following the steps below:

Preliminary Preparation

First, clean the areas to be welded, removing surface oil, burrs, and other impurities. This can be done by sanding or wiping with a cleaning agent to ensure the welding surface is clean. Select appropriate welding equipment based on the material of the office chair. For example, manual arc welding is suitable for ordinary steel, while gas shielded welding (such as carbon dioxide shielded welding) is ideal for scenarios requiring high-quality welds. Additionally, wear protective gear, including a welding mask, insulating gloves, safety shoes, and a dust mask. Ensure the work area is well-ventilated and keep it away from flammable and explosive materials to avoid hazards caused by welding sparks.

Tack Welding for Positioning

Perform tack welding to fix the connection points between the chair legs and seat frame, as well as the backrest and seat frame. Two to three tack welds per connection point are sufficient to initially stabilize the overall structure and prevent dimensional misalignment due to thermal deformation during subsequent full welding. Adjust the current according to the thickness of the pipe during tack welding: For thin-walled parts (such as steel pipes with a diameter less than 20mm), the current should not be too high to avoid burning through the pipe wall; for thick-walled parts, the current should be appropriately increased to ensure penetration. After tack welding, check that all components are aligned to ensure structural stability.

Full Welding Operation

Once positioning is confirmed to be correct, perform full welding on all welds. Maintain an appropriate angle (usually 70ยฐ-80ยฐ) between the welding rod or welding torch and the workpiece during welding, and move the rod/torch uniformly to achieve even and flat welds. For thicker components (such as those exceeding 5mm), multi-layer welding is required: After completing each layer, use a chipping hammer to clean the surface slag before welding the next layer to avoid the formation of pores or slag inclusions inside the weld. Full welding is a critical step; ensure the weld is continuous and free of cold welds to provide sufficient structural strength.

Post-Welding Treatment

  1. Cleaning Weld Slag: Use a chipping hammer, wire brush, or angle grinder to remove weld slag from the surface of the welds, revealing a flat base.
  2. Quality Inspection: Carefully inspect the welds for defects such as pores or cracks. If any issues are found, promptly perform repair welding to correct them.
  3. Surface Finishing: Use an angle grinder to grind away weld beads and raised burrs, then polish with fine sandpaper to make the welds flush with the workpiece surface, preventing scratches to users.
  4. Corrosion Protection: Apply anti-rust paint to the welded areas and exposed steel surfaces, and cover with a topcoat after drying to prevent steel corrosion and extend service life.

Note: If the wobbling of the office chair is primarily caused by loose screws or worn small components, prioritize checking and tightening the screws and replacing worn parts. Welding repair is only suitable for cases where there are indeed welding defects at the connections.
