Office Chair Without Recline
Admin October 12, 2026
The lack of recline function in an office chair may be caused by design limitations or issues with the adjustment mechanism, and can be resolved by checking the adjustment components, unlocking the locking function, etc.

Cause Analysis
- Design Limitations: Some office chairs do not have a recline function due to their structural or mechanical component design. For example, some basic office chairs are designed with simplicity and cost reduction in mind, and are not equipped with the mechanical structure required for recline.
- Adjustment Mechanism Issues:
- Unactivated Adjustment Components: Most office chairs require the use of side handles, knobs, or bottom levers to activate the recline function. If these components are not pulled or rotated, the backrest will remain locked and unable to recline.
- Locked Tilt Angle: Some chairs have a 'locked tilt angle' button, usually located near the adjustment lever. If this button is activated, the chair will not be able to recline.
- Improper Tension Adjustment: For chairs with tension adjustment, if the tension is too high, lighter individuals may require more force to recline and may mistakenly think there is a malfunction.
- Mechanical Jamming: Dust accumulation or insufficient lubrication in the springs and pivot points of the adjustment lever can cause mechanical jamming, affecting the recline function.
- Adjustment Lever Issues: The recline function of some office chairs is achieved through an adjustment lever. If the adjustment lever is damaged or loose, it may result in the inability to recline.
Solutions
- Check Adjustment Components: Sit in the chair and locate the side handle or knob (commonly on the right side, but may also be a bottom lever, or located under the seat for some chairs). For lever-type chairs, press down or pull up the lever while gently leaning back with your back, adjust to the desired angle, and then release the lever to lock. For knob-type chairs, rotate the knob to adjust the recline angle.
- Unlock the Locking Function: Observe if there is a locking button or tab near the adjustment lever, such as a 'Lock' label. Move it to the 'unlock' position (usually 'Unlock' or in the direction of the arrow), and then try to recline again.
- Adjust Tension: Locate the tension adjustment knob, usually on the side or bottom of the chair, marked with 'Tension' or a scale. Rotate it clockwise to decrease tension for easier recline, or counterclockwise to increase tension for more resistance.
- Check the Instruction Manual: Find and read the instruction manual for the purchased office chair to confirm whether the chair has a recline function and the correct operating method.
- Contact the Manufacturer or After-sales Service: If it is confirmed that the office chair should have a recline function but it cannot be achieved, contact the manufacturer or after-sales service personnel for consultation and solutions.
