Office Chair with Steel Plate

Admin October 17, 2026

The main purpose of an office chair with a steel plate is to enhance safety, with the core function of preventing fragments from flying out in the event of a gas spring explosion, protecting users from accidental injuries. The following explains this from three aspects: principles, safety standards, and purchasing advice.

Protective Principles of the Explosion-Proof Steel Plate

The gas spring is the core component for the height adjustment function of an office chair, achieving seat height regulation through high-pressure gas. If the gas spring does not meet quality standards (such as poor sealing or insufficient material strength) or ages after long-term use, it may explode due to abnormal internal pressure. During an explosion, the metal casing of the gas spring can shatter into sharp fragments that fly out at high speed in all directions, causing serious injuries such as cuts and punctures to the user. The explosion-proof steel plate is usually installed between the seat bottom and the gas spring, acting as a physical barrier to intercept fragments. Made mostly of high-strength steel with a thickness generally between 2-3 millimeters, it can withstand the impact force generated by an explosion, confining fragments to the area below the steel plate and preventing direct contact with the human body.

Safety Standards and Certification Requirements

To regulate the safety of office chairs, multiple standards have been established domestically and internationally. For example, the Chinese national standard QB/T 2280-2016 'Office Chairs' explicitly requires that office chairs with gas lift functions must be equipped with explosion-proof devices (such as explosion-proof steel plates) and pass tests for frame strength, sponge density, and gas spring pressure resistance. Additionally, some products may be marked with the 5G5 certification (a safety certification for gas springs), indicating that their gas springs have undergone rigorous testing and have an extremely low risk of explosion. When purchasing, it is advisable to prioritize products that have passed the above standard certifications and confirm that the product description clearly states 'explosion-proof steel plate' or a similar protective design.

Purchasing Advice and Precautions

  1. Confirm the presence of an explosion-proof steel plate: Check the product details page or consult customer service to confirm whether an explosion-proof steel plate is installed at the bottom of the seat. Some low-priced products may omit this component to reduce costs, so special attention is needed.
  2. Check the quality of the gas spring: High-quality gas springs usually bear brand logos, production dates, and safety certification marks (such as SGS and TUV certifications). Avoid choosing gas springs without identification or of unknown origin.
  3. Pay attention to the overall structural stability: In addition to the explosion-proof steel plate, the frame material (such as steel or aluminum alloy) and the load-bearing capacity of the five-star base also affect safety. It is advisable to choose products with a sturdy frame and a larger diameter five-star base.

By taking the above measures, the risks associated with using an office chair can be effectively reduced, ensuring user safety.
