Office Chair with Cockroaches

Admin October 16, 2026

If an office chair has cockroaches, immediate emergency treatment, deep cleaning, environmental management, and long-term preventive measures should be taken. The specific steps are as follows:

I. Emergency Treatment

  1. Physical Removal: Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the crevices, corners, and fabric folds of the office chair to remove adult cockroaches, eggs, and feces. For wooden office chairs, focus on cleaning wood shavings or borer dust to prevent further structural damage from borers (such as termites).
  2. High-Temperature Extermination: Use a hairdryer on the high-temperature setting to continuously blow on the borer-infested areas or cockroach hiding spots for 15 minutes, using high temperatures to destroy their physiological structures. For fabric office chairs, after confirming that the material can withstand sunlight, choose a sunny day to expose them to the sun for 6-8 hours. Ultraviolet rays can kill some eggs.
  3. Chemical Treatment: For cockroaches, prioritize the use of cockroach baits containing imidacloprid (which have a chain-killing effect and low toxicity to mammals), or spread boric acid or food-grade diatomaceous earth (which cause dehydration and death by physically scratching the cockroach exoskeleton). For borers in wooden office chairs, drip a small amount of dichlorvos solution into the holes (strictly control the amount to avoid environmental pollution), or use crushed chili peppers or Sichuan peppercorns to block the borer holes, using the pungent odor to repel them.

II. Deep Cleaning and Environmental Management

  1. Thorough Cleaning: Remove all items from the office chair. Use an old toothbrush or a long-handled brush to scrub deep into the crevices, vacuum up any remaining eggs and debris, and then wipe the surface with a damp cloth. For fabric chairs, remove the seat covers and soak them in hot water above 60ยฐC for cleaning to kill hidden eggs.
  2. Humidity Control: Check the office area for pipe leaks, water accumulation in flower pots, or damp corners. Use a dehumidifier to maintain the environmental humidity below 50%, disrupting the humid conditions required for the survival of cockroaches and borers.
  3. Food and Waste Management: Seal all food items to prevent storage in office desk drawers. Clean up and seal waste for disposal daily to reduce food sources for cockroaches.
  4. Reduce Clutter and Improve Ventilation: Regularly organize documents, books, and other clutter to prevent the formation of warm and humid microenvironments. Maintain air circulation in the office area to reduce the risk of pest infestation.

III. Preventive Measures

  1. Check Entry Points: Seal gaps in window screens and door frames to prevent cockroaches from entering from the outside. Carefully inspect newly purchased plants and second-hand furniture to avoid bringing in pest sources.
  2. Long-Term Prevention: Place sticky cockroach traps and insect boards under desks and in corners to continuously monitor and capture residual pests. Place pest-repelling plants such as mint and lavender to use their natural odors to repel cockroaches.
