Office Chair with Casters
Admin October 10, 2026
Adding casters to an office chair can be achieved through two methods: caster installation and alternative mobility solutions. The appropriate method should be selected based on the chair leg material, usage scenario, and ergonomic requirements.

I. Caster Installation Method
- Material Selection: Prioritize the use of 3-5 cm diameter nylon or rubber swivel casters (with mounting plate style). The load capacity should exceed 20% of the user's weight to ensure long-term stability. For example, a person weighing 70 kg should choose casters with a load capacity of โฅ84 kg.
- Installation Steps:
- Remove the original fixed base and clean any residue from the bottom of the chair legs.
- Secure the casters to the bottom of the chair legs using bolts, installing one caster per leg. A fifth caster can be added at the center point to enhance stability, especially for chairs with a high center of gravity.
- If the chair legs are wooden, reinforce the mounting holes with metal bands to prevent cracking due to pressure.
- Usage Scenarios: Recommended for use on tiled or wooden floors only. Avoid using on rough concrete surfaces, as this can accelerate caster wear and generate noise.
II. Alternative Mobility Solutions
- Slip Pad Method: Attach felt pads or secure silicone sleeves to the bottom of the chair legs to enable slight movement through friction, suitable for carpeted environments. However, regularly check the wear of the slip pads and replace them promptly to avoid scratching the floor.
- Mobile Base Grafting: Purchase a used swivel chair base (average price on second-hand platforms: 40-80 yuan) and attach the original chair seat to the new base using an adapter plate. Measure the size compatibility between the original chair seat and the adapter plate in advance to avoid installation deviations that may cause wobbling.
III. Key Considerations
- Floor Protection: Hard casters (such as metal wheels) should be used with PE floor protection pads to prevent scratches on tiled or wooden floors.
- Ergonomic Adjustment: After modification, the seat height may increase by 3-5 cm due to the casters. Maintain an angle of 95-105 degrees between the lower leg and the floor. If the height is uncomfortable, adjust by adding or removing seat cushion thickness (such as adding memory foam pads) or adjusting the caster height (if supported by adjustable casters).
- Caster Type Selection: Swivel casters support 360-degree free rotation, reducing invalid standing-up times by 70% and improving office efficiency. If a fixed position is required, choose casters with a locking function, which can be instantly locked or unlocked by flipping a button.
