Office Chair Will Not Tip Over

Admin October 09, 2026

Here are the solutions for an office chair that “won't tip over” (unable to reset after lying flat or the backrest fails to rebound):

If the issue is the inability to reset after lying flat, it is usually caused by improper operation, foreign object blockage, or mechanical component failure. It can be resolved through the following steps:

  1. Safety Inspection and Environment Cleaning Place the chair on a flat surface and ensure there is sufficient operating space around it. Focus on inspecting the pivot area at the bottom of the backrest and the gaps in the chassis mechanism. Clear any foreign objects such as clothing or data cables that may be stuck, preventing the backrest from resetting.

  2. Proper Operation of the Control Lever Locate the lever under the seat that controls the recline. Pull it out fully and hold it in the pulled-out position. At this point, the locking tongue should release, and the backrest should automatically rebound to the upright position under the action of the internal spring. After resetting, push the control lever back into the fixing hole to lock the angle. If it is not fully pulled out or accidentally pushed into the area below the fixing hole, the locking tongue will get stuck.

  3. Manual Assisted Reset and Spring Inspection If the backrest still does not rebound, while keeping the control lever pulled out, gently push the backrest to the upright position with your hand and feel the reset resistance. If the spring is completely weak (no elasticity or broken), it needs to be replaced. If the resistance is abnormal, it may be due to hydraulic rod failure, wear on the locking block/locking tongue, or deformation of the locking post, requiring further inspection and repair.

  4. Simple Maintenance and Lubrication If the mechanism feels stiff during operation, apply lubricant (such as WD-40) to the connecting shaft of the control lever and the moving parts of the chassis to reduce friction and restore smoothness.

If the issue is the inability of the backrest to rebound, additional checks are required:

  • Connection between the Casters and the Adjustment Lever: Adjust the position of the casters to ensure they are properly fixed to the adjustment lever (contact a professional if the operation is complex).
  • Component Replacement: If the mechanism spring is damaged, contact the manufacturer or seller to confirm if the components can be replaced. If the repair cost is too high or the components cannot be replaced, it is recommended to replace the chair with a new one.

Handle mechanical failures with caution: When components such as the hydraulic system, locking block, or control拨片 (control tab) are damaged, non-professionals may cause further damage due to improper disassembly. It is advisable to contact after-sales service or a repair technician first.
