Will an Office Chair Break?

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chairs can break, and their susceptibility to malfunctions depends on various factors.

Chair Type and Usage

Complex office chairs are more prone to issues if used improperly. For example, frequent daily adjustments of height and angle, or prolonged continuous use, can lead to problems such as stuck height adjustments, detached casters, and malfunctioning adjustment buckles within one to two years, especially if the chair is of average quality. There have been recalls of office chairs in the market, with issues mainly centered around broken backrests and bolt failures, which can directly cause users to fall and get injured.

Material Quality

Material is a key factor affecting the lifespan of an office chair. Chairs made of inferior materials have a higher risk of malfunctions. For instance, frames made of thin iron sheets or recycled plastics have insufficient load-bearing capacity and are prone to deformation and breakage. In contrast, high-quality materials such as high-strength steel, durable plastics, and premium leather can significantly enhance the chair's durability.

Usage Frequency and Maintenance Habits

High-frequency, long-duration sitting of over eight hours a day, along with improper load-bearing methods such as stepping on or leaning against the chair, can significantly accelerate the wear and tear of the gas lift, casters, and connecting structures. Regular maintenance and proper usage can extend the chair's lifespan, such as regular cleaning, checking for loose screws, and avoiding excessive adjustments.

Usage Environment

Environments with direct ultraviolet rays, high temperatures, and high humidity can severely damage the performance of materials such as PU leather and plastics, causing them to lose elasticity, develop cracks, and potentially lead to rusting of metal components. Therefore, office chairs should be kept away from direct sunlight or humid environments.

Malfunction Signs

When an office chair exhibits functional issues such as malfunctioning height adjustments or automatic sliding down, noticeable wobbling or looseness of the seat, stuck or uneven height adjustments, continuous strange noises, or appearance and structural problems such as noticeable sagging or deformation of the seat cushion or backrest, loose or cracked fabric or paint peeling, stuck or severely worn casters, or cracks or damage to components such as armrests and chair legs, it indicates that the chair has entered its 'aging' phase or poses safety hazards and should be repaired or replaced promptly.
