Office Chair Whitening

Admin October 08, 2026

The repair of whitening on office chairs should be handled differently based on the material. Common causes and methods are as follows:

Whitening of Plastic Office Chairs
The main causes include environmental aging (UV rays breaking down molecular structures), chemical erosion (cleaning agents or solvents corroding the surface), physical friction (scratches causing light scattering), and stress effects (micro-cracks caused by external forces). Repair methods vary depending on the situation:

  1. Heat Repair: Suitable for surface whitening caused by stress or aging. Quickly bake the whitened area with a torch or heat gun (at a distance of about 10-15 cm) to allow deep-seated oils to seep out and restore shine. Strictly control the heat to avoid local overheating, deformation, or burn-through. It is recommended to test on a concealed area first.
  2. Cleaning and Polishing: For mild oxidation or stains, first wipe the surface with a neutral cleaning agent (such as a mixture of dishwashing liquid and warm water) to remove dust and grease. After drying, apply a small amount of plastic polish (such as car wax) with a soft cloth and polish in a circular motion until the shine is restored.
  3. Color Repair: If whitening is accompanied by fading, use plastic-specific pigments (such as acrylic paint) for local color repair. Before applying color, thoroughly clean the surface and lightly sand the whitened area with sandpaper (600-800 grit) to enhance adhesion. Allow the color to dry completely for 24 hours after application.

Whitening of Leather Office Chairs
Common causes include salt residue from sweat, improper use of cleaning agents (such as alkaline products damaging the coating), UV exposure causing oil loss, mold growth in humid environments, or coating process defects. Repair methods should be targeted:

  1. Cleaning Salt Residue: Salt crystals from sweat form a white powdery residue. Use a neutral leather cleaner (such as specialized leather wipes) dipped in a small amount of water to gently wipe the whitened area with a soft cloth, avoiding excessive force that could damage the leather surface. After wiping, use a dry cloth to absorb moisture and allow it to dry naturally in a ventilated area.
  2. Care and Repair: Alkaline cleaning agents can damage the leather coating, causing whitening and cracking. First, remove residual cleaning agents with leather stain remover, then apply leather conditioner (such as products containing lanolin) and massage to promote oil penetration, repair damage, and restore shine. Regular care 1-2 times a month can prevent such issues.
  3. Mold Prevention and Treatment: Humid environments are prone to mold growth, causing leather whitening and odor. First, move the chair to a dry and ventilated area and lightly brush the surface mold with a soft brush. For stubborn mold, use a specialized mold remover (such as a chlorine-containing spray) sprayed on a dry cloth to wipe, avoiding direct spraying on the leather to prevent corrosion. After treatment, ensure thorough drying and apply a mold-resistant spray.

General Advice: Before repairing, determine the type of chair by observing the material label or touching it (plastic chairs have a smooth surface, while leather chairs have texture and are breathable). Avoid using solvent-containing cleaning agents on plastic chairs and alkaline products on leather chairs. If the whitened area is large or you are not skilled in operation, it is recommended to contact professional furniture repair personnel to prevent secondary damage.
