Why Do Office Chair Wheels Turn Black
Admin October 09, 2026
The blackening of office chair wheels is a normal phenomenon caused by material wear, floor friction, and the mixture of impurities, which can be resolved through cleaning and preventive measures.

Reasons for Wheel Blackening
- Material Wear: When rubber or polyurethane (PU) wheels roll frequently, the surface material is microscopically abraded by friction, forming black particles.
- Floor Wear: Hard wheels moving on surfaces like painted wooden floors or epoxy flooring may scratch the floor's surface coating or material powder, mixing it into the wheel debris.
- Impurity Adsorption: As wheels roll, they adsorb dust, dirt, hair, and other impurities, which combine with their own wear particles, exacerbating the formation of black debris.
- Bearing Stagnation: Dust, hair, or threads getting stuck in the wheel axle gaps are ground into black debris during rolling, worsening the 'black drop' phenomenon. If the amount of wheel debris suddenly increases, or if cracks or severe chipping appear on the wheel surface, it may signal wheel aging, poor-quality material, or long-term lack of maintenance.
Cleaning Methods
- Deep Cleaning by Disassembly: If debris is embedded in the wheel axle gaps, lay the chair down and use pliers or scissors to pry open the connection between the wheel and the chair leg, thoroughly cleaning the hair and dust stuck inside the axle.
- Soft Brush and Vacuum Cleaner Combination: Use a soft brush (like an old toothbrush) to brush off dust from the wheel surface and axle center, and use a vacuum cleaner to suck away the debris; if a vacuum cleaner is not available, rub a plastic straw or stick against a cloth to generate static electricity andๅธ้ (adsorb) fine powder.
- Damp Cloth Wiping and Detergent: Lay the chair horizontally and wrap a slightly damp soft cloth around the wheels, rotating them repeatedly to wipe and soften stubborn stains; if there is oily dirt on the surface, dip a small amount of neutral detergent (like dishwashing liquid) to clean it, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth soaked in clean water. Avoid using strong acid or alkali cleaners to prevent corrosion of the material.
- Addressing Stagnation Issues: If the wheels still roll stiffly after cleaning,ๆปดๅ ฅ (drop) 1-2 drops of sewing machine oil or special lubricant into the wheel axle connection, rotate the wheels to evenly penetrate the oil, with the amount of oil not being too much to avoid dripping onto the floor and staining it.
Preventive Measures
- Replace with Suitable Wheels: High-quality PU wheels are more friendly to hard floors (like wooden floors and tiles), leaving fewer scratches and wearing more slowly.
- Reduce Direct Friction: Place transparent rubber pads or carpets in the chair area to reduce the friction intensity between the wheels and the floor.
