Misalignment of Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 10, 2026

If the wheels of your office chair are misaligned, follow these steps to address the issue:

Step 1: Check the Wheel Status
Place the chair upright and observe whether each wheel foot is in contact with the ground. If the ground is uneven, the wheels may not all touch the ground when unoccupied, but the chair will tilt toward the lower side when sat on, which is normal. If the ground is level and misalignment still exists, turn the chair upside down and inspect the wheel feet for any signs of bending, breakage, or wear. Damage to the casters may result from uneven weight distribution, manufacturing defects, or long-term use, and should be thoroughly checked.

Step 2: Replace Damaged Wheels
If damaged wheels are found, purchase matching new wheels. You can contact the chair manufacturer for the model number to order original wheel feet or remove the old wheels and take them to an office supplies store for comparison and replacement. Pay special attention to the shape and size of the wheel axles to avoid installation difficulties or abnormal use due to incompatibility.

Step 3: Remove Old Casters

  • Direct Pull-out: Grasp the wheel and the bottom of the chair with your hands and pull outward forcefully.
  • Screwdriver Assistance: If the caster is tightly stuck, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the wheel foot and the chair's contact point, and use the blade as a lever to slowly pry it open. Once the wheel foot rod is exposed by about 1 centimeter, pull it out again.
  • Screw-Fixed Type: If the wheel is fixed with screws, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and then remove the wheel.

Step 4: Lubrication and Installation

  • Lubrication: Spray a small amount of WD-40 or other spray lubricant into the chair base sockets (use the straw for precise spraying, half a second per socket), or apply petroleum jelly to the wheel axles.
  • Tap Installation: Align the new caster rod with the base, push it in gently with your hands first, and if it doesn't catch, tap the wheel lightly with a rubber mallet (preferably near the base of the stem rather than the bottom of the wheel to avoid deformation) until the rod is fully inserted into the base.

Step 5: Handling Special Types

  • Boss Chair Threaded Wheels: If the wheel threads are loose, tighten them with a wrench.
  • Snap-Ring Wheels: If the wheel is damaged or the mounting hole is worn, replace the wheel or repair the mounting hole.
  • Adjustable Connecting Rods: Turn the chair upside down, pull out the casters, adjust the position of the connecting rod inserted into the base, and then reinstall the casters.

Precautions: Ensure the chair is stable during operation to avoid tipping over or damaging components due to excessive force. If the problem persists, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician.
