Office Chair Wheels Are Too Stuck
The issue of office chair wheels being too stuck can be resolved by cleaning, replacing with compatible wheels, or installing new wheels. Details are as follows:

Dust and Hair Entanglement
This is the most common cause and requires different approaches depending on the situation:
- Simple Cleaning: Turn the chair upside down. Bend a paper clip into a hook and use it to pull out surface hair along the wheel axle gap. If the floor is damp, push the chair to let the floor pick up loose hair and debris. If the hair is tightly wound, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the wheel cover by 3 - 4mm, insert a box cutter at an angle to cut the hair, then use tweezers to remove the broken hair. Alternatively, you can directly pull out the wheel vertically, clean it, and then put it back in place.
- Disassembly Cleaning: Turn the chair upside down. Use your hand or a flat-head screwdriver (with a soft cloth underneath) to remove snap-on wheels. Use tweezers to pick out long hair and fibers from the gaps, operating in the direction of rotation to avoid worsening the entanglement. Use an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent to scrub the wheel surface and bearing gaps to remove dust and grease. Rinse with clean water (avoid getting water into the bearings), dry with a dry cloth, and then air-dry for 10 minutes.
Mismatch Between Floor Material and Wheel Type
Hard floors (such as tiles and wooden floors) are suitable for hard wheels, while soft floors (such as carpets) require soft or silent wheels. If the wheels get stuck on a specific floor, you can replace them with wheels made of a compatible material.
Wheel Aging or Damage
- Assess the Condition: Check if the wheel surface is flat and free of cracks or deformations. Rotate the wheel to see if it rotates smoothly or makes abnormal noises. Test it on different floors to rule out floor-related factors.
- Replace the Wheels: Measure the diameter of the original wheels, the width of the bracket, and the type of connecting axle. Purchase new wheels with matching specifications. Simply pull out the old wheels and insert the new ones (you can tap lightly to assist if the connection is tight).
Preventive Measures
Regularly clean the dust around the wheels (recommended for 5 minutes per month). Avoid forcibly dragging the chair on rough or sharp floors. Keep the environment clean to reduce the entry of debris. Place a small floor mat at your workstation to reduce the entry of hair and dust into the wheel axles.
