Office Chair Wheel Replacement

Admin October 09, 2026

Replacing the wheels on an office chair does not require professional maintenance; mastering key steps allows you to complete the task independently. The specific operations can be divided into four steps: identifying the wheel type, removing the old wheels, installing new wheels, and testing and adjusting. It is necessary to select the appropriate tools based on the wheel type and pay attention to material and size matching.

1. Identifying the Wheel Type
Place the chair upside down steadily and observe the connection method between the wheels and the chair legs:

  • Snap-ring type: There is a circular groove at the top of the wheel axle, which makes a 'click' sound when pressed. Approximately 80% of office chairs use this design.
  • Threaded type: The wheel axle has a distinct external thread structure and requires rotation for removal.
  • Pin-type: The wheel is directly inserted into the chair leg via a metal pin without complex structures.

2. Removing the Old Wheels

  • Snap-ring type: Insert a screwdriver or flat tool into the gap between the wheel axle and the chair leg, gently pry the snap-ring position, and pull it out vertically after hearing a 'click' sound. If there is significant resistance, lay a soft cloth on the ground for cushioning or gently tap the edge of the wheel with a hammer for assistance.
  • Threaded type: Use a 6-inch adjustable wrench to grip the root of the wheel axle, maintain a 45-degree angle with the ground, and rotate counterclockwise. If there is severe rust, first spray WD-40 lubricant, control the torque between 3-5Nยทm, and avoid excessive force that could damage the threads.
  • Pin-type: Pull it out vertically with force directly. If there is too much resistance, use pliers to grip the pin and tap it with a hammer in conjunction.

3. Installing New Wheels

  • Snap-ring type: Align the new wheel with the insertion hole on the chair leg, press it vertically until you hear a 'click' sound, ensuring the snap-ring is fully embedded in the groove.
  • Threaded type: Rotate the wheel axle clockwise until it is fully tightened to prevent looseness that could cause unstable sliding.
  • Pin-type: Simply press it against the hole directly without additional fixation.

4. Testing and Adjusting
After installation, push the chair to test:

  • Noise: The noise should be below 45 decibels when sliding on a tiled floor.
  • Smoothness: Continuous rolling for 10 meters without stuttering is considered qualified.
  • Interface Matching: If it does not match, lightly sand the metal pin with sandpaper or wrap it with Teflon tape for temporary adjustment. However, this will reduce the load-bearing capacity, and it is recommended to prioritize replacing matching wheels.

Precautions:

  • Material Selection: For hard floors (wood/tile), prioritize PU wheels to reduce scratching risk by 80%; nylon wheels are suitable for carpeted environments.
  • Size Matching: Common wheel diameters are 5cm (light-duty chairs), 6cm (medium-duty chairs), and 7.5cm (heavy-duty chairs). The pin diameter must strictly match the international standard ฮฆ11mm.
  • Special Needs: Families with children can opt for wheels with brake functions, while scenarios like gaming chairs are recommended to choose double ball bearing wheels to enhance smoothness.
