Office Chair Wheel Replacement

Admin October 08, 2026

Replacing office chair wheels can be accomplished through steps such as identifying the old wheel type, removing the old wheels, and installing new ones, with attention to accessory selection and detail handling during the process.

1. Identifying the Old Wheel Type

Common types of office chair wheels include snap-ring types and threaded types:

  • Snap-ring type: The wheel connection features a round disc shape, secured by a snap ring, commonly found on lightweight office chairs.
  • Threaded type: The wheel connection has a hexagonal shape, tightened by threading, often used on heavy-duty or height-adjustable chairs.

2. Removing the Old Wheels

Select tools based on the wheel type:

  • Snap-ring type: Use a screwdriver (flat-head or Phillips) to gently pry open the snap ring at the connection between the wheel and chair leg, then slowly pull out the old wheel; if the snap ring is too tight, apply a small amount of WD-40 rust remover for lubrication before proceeding.
  • Threaded type: Use a wrench (recommended size 10-12) to hold the hexagonal connection of the wheel and turn it counterclockwise to unscrew the old wheel; if the threads are rusted, soak them in rust remover for 5 minutes before disassembly.

3. Installing New Wheels

  • Snap-ring type: Align the new wheel with the chair leg slot, press firmly until the snap ring clicks back into place, ensuring a tight fit between the wheel and chair leg.
  • Threaded type: Align the hexagonal interface of the new wheel with the threaded hole on the chair leg, use a wrench to turn it clockwise until it can no longer rotate, preventing loosening during use.

4. Accessory Selection Recommendations

  • Universal silent wheels: Average price around 15 yuan, made of PU material, capable of bearing over 100 kg, with sliding noise below 30 decibels, suitable for most standard chair leg sizes (diameter 2.5-3 cm).
  • Special-scenario wheels: For short-pile carpet floors, choose wide wheels with a diameter of โ‰ฅ5 cm to distribute pressure and prevent sinking; for frequent heavy-object movement, opt for metal-bearing wheels for 50% increased durability.

5. Precautions

  • Stuck wheels from long-term disuse: May be due to dust or rust in the bearings; spray WD-40, let it sit for 2 minutes, then rotate the wheel to clean; if still not smooth, replace with new wheels.
  • Operational safety: Avoid excessive force during disassembly to prevent deformation of the chair legs; if women have difficulty with disassembly, lightly tap the side of the chair leg's five-star base facing the ground with a rolling pin to assist in wheel removal.
  • Compatibility verification: Ensure the diameter of the new wheel matches the old one to avoid installation failure or chair leg wear due to size mismatch.
