Office Chair Wheel Replacement
Admin October 22, 2026
The steps for replacing the wheels of an office chair are as follows:

I. Identify the Wheel Type and Size Invert the office chair steadily and observe the connection method between the wheels and the chair legs to determine the type:
- Snap-ring Wheels: These have a circular groove at the top of the axle, which makes a clicking sound when pressed. They are commonly found on light-duty office chairs.
- Threaded Wheels: These have a visible external thread on the axle, similar to a screw structure, and are mostly used on medium- or heavy-duty chairs. Also, measure the wheel diameter: Use a vernier caliper to measure the diameter of the original wheel. Common specifications are 5cm (for light-duty chairs), 6cm (for medium-duty chairs), and 7.5cm (for heavy-duty chairs); the diameter of the insert rod is usually ฮฆ11mm. Additionally, choose the wheel material based on the floor type: For hard floors (wooden floors, tiles), PU wheels must be used to avoid scratches, while nylon wheels are suitable for carpeted environments to enhance grip.
II. Remove the Old Wheels
- Removing Snap-ring Wheels:
- Insert a screwdriver or flat tool into the gap between the axle and the chair leg, gently pry the snap-ring position, and pull the wheel straight out after hearing a clicking sound.
- If the snap-ring is tight, use pliers to grip the base of the axle and pull it out forcefully, or tap the bottom of the axle lightly with a hammer to assist in removal.
- Removing Threaded Wheels:
- Use a 6-inch adjustable wrench to grip the base of the axle, rotate it counterclockwise at a 45-degree angle to the ground, or use a small wrench to loosen it to the left.
- If the wheel is severely rusted, spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant first, wait 5-10 minutes, and then remove it to avoid breaking the axle due to forced rotation.
III. Install the New Wheels
- Installing Snap-ring Wheels:
- Align the new wheel with the insert hole on the chair leg and press it straight down until you hear a clicking sound, confirming that the snap-ring is fully embedded in the groove.
- After installation, gently shake the wheel to check if it is secure and not loose.
- Installing Threaded Wheels:
- Align the new wheel with the insert hole on the chair leg and rotate it clockwise until it is fully tightened, ensuring that the thread is tightly engaged with the chair leg.
- If installation is difficult, apply even pressure with the palm of your hand to assist in rotation, avoiding excessive force that may deform the axle.
Precautions:
- It is recommended to wear gloves when replacing wheels to prevent hand injuries from metal parts.
- If the chair legs are made of plastic, control the force during removal and installation to avoid cracking the chair legs due to excessive force.
- After replacement, place the chair back on the ground and test if the wheels roll smoothly, ensuring there is no jamming or abnormal noise.
