Office Chair Wheel Replacement
Admin October 19, 2026
When replacing office chair wheels, first ensure that the interface types match, then follow the steps and pay attention to key parameters. Details are as follows:

1. Confirm the Interface Type
The wheels of office swivel chairs on the market mainly come in two types: snap-ring type (rodless snap-ring) and threaded screw-in type. Most IKEA swivel chairs use the snap-ring type or the insert-rod type (which are mainstream standards). If the interface types are the same, wheels from different brands can generally be interchanged.
2. Replacement Steps
Measure and Purchase New Wheels
- Use a tape measure to measure the outer diameter of the old wheels (common specifications are 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm). Note that wear and tear may cause changes in size, so it is advisable to measure the actual diameter.
- Confirm the interface type (snap-ring or threaded) and prioritize choosing new wheels that match the parameters of the old ones.
Remove the Old Wheels
- Method 1: Insert the claw part of a claw hammer into the gap between the wheel and the chair leg, and pry it out using the lever principle; or pull it out directly with force (there is an anti-loosening notch at the top of the wheel, which requires significant force; be careful not to damage the wall of the chair leg tube).
- Method 2: Use pliers to grip the root of the wheel tightly and pull it out with force; if it still cannot be removed, lightly tap the edge of the wheel with a hammer to help loosen it.
Install the New Wheels
- Snap-ring type: Align the wheel with the hole in the chair leg and insert it vertically. A clicking sound indicates that it is locked in place.
- Threaded type: Align the wheel with the threaded hole and turn it clockwise to tighten. If insertion is difficult, try repeatedly or adjust the angle slightly.
3. Key Parameter Considerations
- Diameter Compatibility: The diameter of the IKEA ALEX casters is 50mm, and that of the BEKANT is 80mm; the common diameters of universal caster wheels on the market are 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm. Ensure that the hole in the chair leg matches the diameter of the wheel during actual installation.
- Load-bearing Capacity: The original IKEA casters are rated for a maximum load of 20 kilograms per wheel, while universal caster wheels on the market generally have a rated load capacity of around 50 kilograms per wheel. When replacing, choose wheels with sufficient load-bearing capacity according to the usage scenario (such as body weight and cargo requirements).
- Installation Height: The height of the IKEA ALEX casters when the legs are lifted is 7 centimeters, and that of the BEKANT is 12 centimeters; the installation heights of universal caster wheels on the market are mostly between 5 and 12 centimeters. When replacing, it is recommended that the height difference between the new and old wheels does not exceed 1 to 2 centimeters to avoid affecting the stability of the chair or causing scratches on the floor.
