Office Chair Wheel Replacement
Admin October 17, 2026
Replacing office chair wheels does not require professional maintenance. Master the following steps to complete the task independently:

1. Identify Wheel Type and Size
- Type Identification:
- Snap-ring type: The top of the wheel axle has a circular groove that makes a 'click' sound when pressed, commonly found in light-duty office chairs.
- Threaded type: The wheel axle has a visible external thread, similar to a screw structure, mostly used in medium or heavy-duty chairs.
- Size Measurement:
- The diameter of the insert rod is usually ฮฆ11mm. Use a vernier caliper to measure the diameter of the original wheel. Common specifications are:
- Light-duty chairs: 5cm
- Medium-duty chairs: 6cm
- Heavy-duty chairs: 7.5cm
- A diameter tolerance of ยฑ0.5cm is allowed, but ensure that the bottom of the gas cylinder is at least 2cm above the ground after installation.
- The diameter of the insert rod is usually ฮฆ11mm. Use a vernier caliper to measure the diameter of the original wheel. Common specifications are:
2. Prepare Tools and Materials
- Tool Selection:
- Snap-ring wheels: No tools required; a screwdriver or flat tool can assist in disassembly.
- Threaded wheels: A 6-inch wrench is needed; if the wheels are severely rusted, prepare WD-40 lubricant.
- New Wheel Purchase:
- Material: For hard floors (wood/tile), choose PU wheels; for carpeted environments, choose nylon wheels; families with children can choose wheels with brake functions, and gaming chairs or similar scenarios can choose double ball bearing wheels.
- Price: The unit price of ordinary nylon wheels is about 3 yuan, and a set of high-quality PU wheels (5 pieces) is about 15 yuan. It is recommended to prioritize products that have passed SGS certification.
3. Remove Old Wheels
- Snap-ring wheels:
- Insert a screwdriver into the gap between the wheel axle and the chair leg, gently pry the snap-ring position, and pull it out vertically after hearing a 'click' sound.
- If direct pulling lacks strength, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry into the gap or use pliers to grip the rod and tap it lightly with a hammer.
- Threaded wheels:
- Use a wrench to rotate the old wheel counterclockwise at a 45-degree angle to the ground.
- For severe rust, spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant first. The torque value for international standard threaded wheels is usually 3-5Nยทm.
4. Install New Wheels
- Snap-ring wheels: Press the new wheel vertically until you hear a 'click' sound, ensuring the snap-ring is fully embedded in the groove.
- Threaded wheels: Rotate the new wheel clockwise until it is fully tightened, avoiding excessive force that may cause slippage.
5. Test and Adjust
- Noise Test: Push the chair on a tiled floor; the noise should be below 45 decibels.
- Rolling Test: Continuously roll for 10 meters without stuttering or deviation to be considered qualified.
Precautions:
- Avoid damaging the chair legs or other components during operation. If unsure, refer to video tutorials or seek assistance.
- If the interface does not match, lightly sand the metal insert rod with sandpaper or wrap the thread with Teflon tape to increase the diameter (only for temporary use, which will reduce the load-bearing capacity).
