Office Chair Wheel Replacement

Admin October 14, 2026

The steps for replacing office chair wheels are as follows:

1. Preparation and Laying the Chair Down
First, lay the office chair down on a flat surface to ensure it does not slide or tip over during the operation. If the chair has an adjustable height feature, it is recommended to lower the pneumatic rod to its lowest position to reduce the center of gravity and enhance stability. After laying the chair down, check if the wheel connection points are visible. Some chairs may require removing the bottom decorative cover or fixing screws to expose the wheel mounting holes.

2. Removing the Old Wheels
Old wheels are typically fixed to the chair legs with metal force cores (pins). To remove them, pull outward in the opposite direction of the force core. If the wheels are stuck due to long-term use or rust, first use pliers to grip the connection between the wheel root and the force core, applying even pressure to pull outward. If the pliers are ineffective, you can use a hammer to lightly tap the side of the wheel or the end of the force core to loosen the catch through vibration. Be careful to control the tapping force to avoid damaging the chair legs or wheel mounting holes.

3. Installing the New Wheels
It is recommended to choose 3-inch (75mm) PU wheels for the new wheels, with the following advantages:

  • Material Characteristics: PU (polyurethane) material has moderate hardness, ensuring smooth rolling while reducing friction noise with the floor. It also prevents hard wheels (such as nylon) from scratching wooden floors or tiles.
  • Performance Balance: This size of wheel balances mobility and stability, suitable for most office scenarios, and has a load-bearing capacity of up to 45 kilograms, meeting regular usage needs.

When installing, insert the wheel force core vertically into the chair leg mounting hole along the hole direction, maintaining even pressure and continuous downward force. If the initial insertion is difficult, you can slightly rotate the wheel or adjust the angle before trying again, avoiding brute force that could bend the force core. After insertion, check if the wheel fits snugly against the chair leg without wobbling or gaps.

4. Testing and Adjustment
After completing the installation, return the chair to an upright position and push it to test if the wheels roll smoothly without any unusual noises or stuttering. If you find that a particular wheel does not rotate flexibly, check if the force core is fully inserted or if there is any foreign object blocking the wheel. If necessary, remove and adjust it again.

Precautions:

  • It is recommended to wear gloves before operating to prevent metal parts from scratching your fingers.
  • If the chair legs are made of plastic, be more cautious when removing the old wheels to avoid cracking the chair legs due to excessive force.
  • Regularly clean the wheels and mounting holes to extend their service life and reduce the failure rate.
