Office Chair Wheel Replacement
Admin October 12, 2026
The replacement of office chair wheels can be carried out according to the following steps:

I. Removing the Old Wheels
- Tool Selection and Basic Operations
First, use a pair of pliers to grip the connection point between the old wheel and the chair tightly, and pull it straight up with force. If the wheel is tightly connected to the axle, you can switch to using a hammer to gently tap the top of the wheel, using the vibration to loosen the connection. - Lever Principle Prying Method
If direct pulling is ineffective, you can use a pair of needle-nose pliers as a lever tool:
- Clamp the metal axle part at the connection between the wheel and the chair with the pliers' jaws, and find a protrusion on the chair frame or wheel housing as a fulcrum;
- Slowly pry outward while rotating the wheel counterclockwise, using the rotational friction to assist in separation;
- If the plastic part of the wheel breaks but the axle remains, adjust the position of the pliers' jaws to the upper part of the ring and use the edge of the ring as a new fulcrum to continue prying until the axle is completely detached.
- Assistance with Special Tools
When professional tools are lacking, you can try inserting a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the wheel and the axle and gradually pry it open using the lever principle, but be careful to control the force to avoid damaging the chair surface.
II. Installing the New Wheels
- Direct Pressing Method
Align the axle of the new wheel with the interface hole on the chair and press it straight in evenly with the palm of your hand. If it is not fully embedded on the first attempt, repeat the pressing 2-3 times, using the elasticity of the plastic axle to gradually secure it. - Rotation Assistance Method
While pressing, rotate the wheel clockwise to enhance the fixing effect through the thread engagement principle. This method is suitable for new wheels with fine threads at the end of the axle and can improve installation stability. - Gravity Natural Installation Method
If manual installation is difficult, you can invert the chair (wheels facing up) and sit on the seat to apply continuous pressure. The weight pressure will gradually drive the wheel axle into the interface, and usually, 10-15 minutes of stillness is enough to complete the natural engagement.
Precautions:
- It is recommended to wear gloves before operation to prevent metal tools from scratching your fingers;
- If the wheel axle is rusted, you can first spray a rust remover on the interface and wait for it to lubricate before disassembly;
- After installing the new wheels, check their rotational flexibility. If there is any jamming, you can slightly adjust the angle of the wheels and press them repeatedly.
