Office Chair Wheel Replacement
Admin October 10, 2026
Replacing office chair wheels does not require professional maintenance; mastering key steps allows you to complete the task independently. Here are the specific methods:

1. Identify the Wheel Type
Turn the chair upside down steadily and observe the connection method between the wheel and the chair leg:
- Snap-ring wheels: There is a circular groove at the top of the wheel axle. When pressed, it will make a 'click' sound and can usually be removed without tools.
- Threaded wheels: The wheel axle has obvious external threads, similar to a screw structure, and requires a wrench to rotate and remove.
2. Remove the Old Wheels
- Snap-ring wheels:
- Insert a screwdriver or flat tool into the gap between the wheel axle and the chair leg, and gently pry the snap-ring position. When you hear a 'click' sound, it indicates that the snap-ring has been released, and you can pull the wheel straight out.
- If it cannot be pulled out directly by force, you can use a flat-head screwdriver to pry into the gap or use pliers to clamp the rod and then knock it out with a hammer.
- Threaded wheels:
- Use a 6-inch adjustable wrench to clamp the root of the wheel axle and rotate it counterclockwise at a 45-degree angle to the ground.
- If the wheel is severely rusted, you can first spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant; if it still cannot be removed, you can use pliers to clamp the rod tightly and then knock it.
3. Install the New Wheels
- Snap-ring wheels: Align the new wheel with the insertion hole of the chair leg and press it straight down until you hear a 'click' sound to ensure that the snap-ring is fully engaged.
- Threaded wheels: Align the new wheel with the insertion hole of the chair leg and rotate it clockwise until it is fully tightened to avoid loosening.
4. Testing and Adjustment
- After installation, push the chair to test it. The noise should be lower than 45 decibels when sliding on a tiled floor, and continuous rolling for 10 meters without jamming is considered qualified.
- If the interface does not match, you can lightly sand the metal insertion rod with sandpaper or wrap the thread with Teflon tape to increase the diameter (only for temporary use).
Precautions
- Material Selection: For hard floors (wooden floors/tiles), use PU material wheels to reduce the risk of scratches by 80%; nylon wheels are suitable for carpeted environments.
- Size Matching: Use a vernier caliper to measure the diameter of the original wheel (common specifications are 5cm, 6cm, 7.5cm), and the diameter of the insertion rod must strictly match the international standard ฮฆ11mm.
- Tool Preparation: Snap-ring wheels do not require tools, while threaded wheels require a 6-inch wrench; if removal is difficult, you can use a screwdriver, pliers, or a hammer as assistance.
