Office Chair Wheel Replacement

Admin October 10, 2026

The method of replacing the wheels on an office chair mainly consists of two steps: removing the old wheels and installing the new ones. The specific operation should be selected according to the type of wheel.

I. Removing the Old Wheels

  1. Stem-mounted wheels: These wheels are fixed by inserting a metal stem directly into the chair leg hole. To remove them, hold the wheel with both hands and pull it straight up with force. If the friction is too high due to long-term use and it is difficult to pull out, you can use tools for assistance: Use pliers to grip the metal stem (near the chair leg hole), and then gently tap the top of the pliers with a hammer. Use the vibration and lever principle to loosen the wheel and pull it out.
  2. Screw-fixed wheels: Some office chair wheels are connected to the chair legs with screws. In this case, use a screwdriver or wrench (select the appropriate tool according to the screw type) and rotate the screw counterclockwise until it is completely unscrewed. Then you can remove the old wheel.

II. Installing the New Wheels

  1. Stem-mounted wheel installation: Align the metal stem of the new wheel with the chair leg hole and press it straight down with force until the wheel is fully embedded in the hole. If there is a lot of resistance when pressing, try adjusting the angle or slightly rotating the wheel to avoid damaging the chair leg or the wheel by forcing it. If multiple attempts still fail to insert it, there may be burrs inside the hole or a size deviation of the wheel. You need to check and clean the impurities inside the hole or replace it with a suitable wheel.
  2. Screw-fixed wheel installation: Align the screw hole of the new wheel with the chair leg hole, insert the screw, and then rotate the tool clockwise to tighten it. Ensure that the screw is completely fixed and the wheel does not wobble. After installation, you can gently shake the wheel to test its stability. If it is loose, tighten the screw again.

Precautions:

  • It is recommended to invert or lay the office chair flat before operation to prevent the chair surface from touching the ground and causing contamination or damage.
  • When using tools, control the force to prevent scratching the surface of the chair leg or damaging the wheel structure.
  • If the wheel type is different from the above (such as snap-in type), observe the connection structure between the wheel and the chair leg. Usually, it can be removed by pressing the snap or rotating to unlock, and installed by reversing the operation.
  • After replacing the wheels, you can push the office chair to test whether the rolling is smooth. If there is stuttering or abnormal noise, check whether the wheels are installed properly or whether there are foreign objects inside the chair leg holes.
