Office Chair Wheel Replacement
The steps for replacing the rubber wheels on an office chair mainly include confirming the fixing method, removing the old wheels, and installing the new wheels. The specific operations need to be adjusted according to the type of wheel fixing.

First, confirm the fixing method of the wheels. There are three common types: snap-button press type, screw-fixed type, and circular-rod insertion type. The wheel rod of the snap-button press type is cylindrical with a circle of anti-slip snaps; the wheel rod of the screw-fixed type has threads; and the wheel rod of the circular-rod insertion type is a smooth cylinder without snaps or threads. The confirmation can be made by observing the structure of the wheel rod or trying to gently shake the wheel: the snap-button type will have slight elasticity, the screw type requires flipping the chair to check the connection, and the insertion type can be directly pulled out but may be tight.
When removing the old wheels, operate according to the fixing type:
- Snap-button press type: Hold the wheel firmly and pull it outward with force, or place a towel between the wheel and the ground and gently tap the edge of the wheel with a hammer to shake it out. Be careful not to hit the chair frame. If the snap is too tight, you can spray a small amount of rust remover and lubricant and let it sit for a few minutes before trying again.
- Screw-fixed type: Flip the chair over, use a screwdriver to unscrew the fixing screw at the connection between the wheel and the frame, and remove the old wheel. If the screw is rusted, you can also spray lubricant to assist in disassembly.
- Circular-rod insertion type: Pull the wheel rod outward directly. If you don't have enough strength, you can use pliers to clamp the rod and gently tap the pliers with a hammer to assist in pulling it out.
When installing the new wheels, ensure compatibility:
- The diameter of the new wheel rod should match the hole diameter of the chair frame to avoid looseness or inability to insert. You can first compare the hole diameter with the old wheel or measure the rod diameter and then purchase the corresponding specification.
- Snap-button press type: Align the metal rod of the new wheel with the insertion hole of the frame and press it in firmly until you hear a 'click' sound to confirm that the snap is securely fastened.
- Screw-fixed type: Align the screw hole of the new wheel with the hole of the frame, screw the screw back in, and fix it firmly.
- Circular-rod insertion type: Simply align the fork rod of the new wheel with the hole and press it in.
Additional precautions:
- If you encounter jamming during disassembly, do not pry it hard. Give priority to using lubricant to soften the connection.
- Choose the wheel material according to the floor type. For example, for wooden floors, it is recommended to use rubber silent rollers to reduce scratches and noise.
- After replacement, gently shake the wheels to test their stability and ensure there is no looseness or abnormal noise.
