Office Chair Wheel Repair Guide

Admin October 22, 2026

If the wheels of your office chair have come off, follow these steps to handle it:

Step 1: Check the wheel condition
First, determine whether the wheel has completely fallen off or is still partially attached. If the plastic part of the wheel is damaged and has fallen off, but the central metal core remains on the seat, special tools are required for disassembly. If the wheel is only damaged but has not fallen off, you can proceed with disassembly directly.

Step 2: Remove the old wheels

  • Plastic part has fallen off: Use a nail hammer to hook the metal core's catch, and use another hammer to strike the seat's load-bearing rod. After multiple strikes, the wheel can be removed.
  • Wheel has not fallen off: Hold the wheel with your hand and strike the load-bearing rod with a hammer. Strike it a few times to remove the wheel.
  • Universal method: Pull out the caster directly (hold the wheel with one hand and the bottom of the chair with the other). If the caster foot cannot be pulled out, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the small gap between the caster foot and the chair as a lever and operate it slowly. Once the caster foot rod is pulled out about 1 centimeter, pull it again. If the caster is fixed with screws, loosen the screws with a screwdriver and remove it.

Step 3: Prepare new wheels

  • Purchase wheels that are compatible with the type of five-star base of your seat. Prioritize high-quality nylon casters (more durable than plastic casters).
  • Confirm the interface size: The diameter of the bracket interface is commonly 11mm or 13mm. Some gaming chairs may require custom-shaped interfaces. You can first measure the size of the original wheel post with a vernier caliper or go to a mainstream office furniture store for free measurement services.

Step 4: Install the new wheels

  • Hammer installation: Align the center of the new wheel with the installation hole on the seat and gently strike the center part with a hammer to ensure it is secure.
  • Lubrication assistance: Apply a small amount of spray lubricant (such as WD-40) to the socket of the chair base, or apply petroleum jelly to the wheel axle. Then use a rubber hammer to knock the caster into the socket. Align the rod with the base and give it a light push to test.
  • Install the plastic bushing: If the plastic bushing is lost during disassembly (some seats are designed with it), install the new bushing before installing the wheel.

Step 5: Test the stability
After installation, gently shake the seat to check if the wheels are secure. Turn the chair upside down and sit on it. If it rolls smoothly and does not tilt, the installation is successful.

Precautions: Wear gloves during operation to avoid scratches. If the wheel is stuck or the seat structure is complex, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling.
