Office Chair Wheel Removal

Admin October 13, 2026

The method for removing office chair wheels depends on the wheel type. Here are the specific steps:

1. Pin-type Wheels

These wheels are fixed by inserting a metal pin directly into a hole in the chair leg. To remove them, pull straight up. If friction makes it difficult to do by hand, use tools for assistance:

  • Flat-head Screwdriver Prying: Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the gap between the wheel and the chair leg, gently pry the edge of the metal pin, and loosen the connection using the lever principle.
  • Pliers + Hammer Tapping: Use needle-nose pliers or adjustable pliers to grip the top of the metal pin, and hold a hammer in the other hand to lightly tap the handle of the pliers, using the impact force to dislodge the wheel.
Note: Keep the chair leg stable during operation to avoid breaking it due to excessive force.

2. Threaded-fixed Wheels

The wheels are connected to the chair leg threads via a nut and require a tool to be rotated counterclockwise for disassembly:

  • General Tools: Select a 15mm small wrench or open-end wrench, tighten it around the nut, and rotate slowly.
  • Special Brand Tools: German brands (such as DXRacer) may use M8 hex screws for fixation, requiring a corresponding-sized hex wrench.
Tip: If the nut is rusted, add a small amount of sewing machine oil for lubrication, or use a hairdryer to heat the metal part to 60ยฐC (avoid high temperatures that could damage the plastic), and use the principle of thermal expansion and contraction to loosen the threads.

3. Snap-fit Wheels

These wheels rely on anti-disengagement protrusions or elastic snaps at the base of the wheel axle for fixation. Removal requires step-by-step operation:

  • Basic Removal: Grasp the wheel with both palms and pull straight up. For some brands (such as Ergomax and Sihoo), you need to press the anti-disengagement protrusion at the base of the wheel axle first, and then apply force simultaneously.
  • Stuck Handling: If the wheel is completely stuck, rotate it 30ยฐ left and right to create a loose gap, or lightly tap the bottom of the wheel axle with a rubber mallet to separate the snap-fit through vibration.

4. Special Case Handling

  • Wheel and Plastic Separation: If the wheel comes off but the metal axle is still connected to the chair leg, use needle-nose vise grips to grip the joint between the axle and the chair leg, use the chair leg as a fulcrum to pry, and rotate the axle counterclockwise at the same time.
  • Rust Stuck: In addition to oil lubrication, you can spray rust remover on the threaded or snap-fit parts, let it sit for 10 minutes, and then try to remove it.

Pre-operation Advice: Keep one original wheel for comparison, confirm the diameter of the new wheel's axle (usually 11-13mm) and the type of snap-fit (triangular or star-shaped) to avoid incompatibility after replacement. If you encounter excessive resistance or abnormal sounds during operation, stop immediately and check the fixation method. If necessary, contact a professional repair technician.
