Office Chair Wheel Removal

Admin October 12, 2026

The removal of office chair wheels can be carried out according to the following steps. Pay attention to safety and use appropriate tools during the operation:

Step 1: Remove the snap ring rod The snap ring rod is a key component for fixing the wheels and is usually located at the connection between the wheels and the chair frame. Insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver or a special pry bar into the gap between the snap ring rod and the frame, and pry outward forcefully. Since the snap ring rod is fixed by an elastic snap, a relatively large force is required for removal. If the tool slips, try adjusting the angle or padding it with a soft cloth to increase friction. After prying out the old rod, check if there is any debris left in the frame hole and clean it up for the installation of new wheels.

Step 2: Assist in prying the wheels If the wheels are tightly connected to the frame, insert needle-nose pliers into the gap between the wheels and the frame and gently pry to loosen the connection. The purpose of this step is to expand the separation space between the wheels and the frame to avoid direct violent removal that may deform the frame. Control the force during operation to avoid scratching the frame surface or damaging the wheel axle hole.

Step 3: Pry open the wheel body Use needle-nose vise grips to clamp the connection between the wheels and the frame (preferably at the junction of the wheel axle and the plastic part). With the edge of the frame as a fulcrum, slowly pry outward and at the same time, rotate the wheels counterclockwise to break the biting force of the threads or snaps. If the wheel axle separates from the plastic part (the axle is still attached to the chair), change to clamping the upper part of the wheel ring and continue prying with the ring as a fulcrum until the wheels are completely detached. This step requires patient operation to avoid breaking the axle inside the frame due to excessive force.

Step 4: Deal with threaded wheels Some wheels are connected to the frame by threads. For such wheels, use a small wrench (usually with a size of 6 - 8mm). Place the wrench on the nut of the wheel axle and turn it to the left (counterclockwise) to loosen it. If the threads are rusty, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD - 40) and wait for 5 minutes before operating. After removal, check if the threads are intact. If damaged, replace the matching frame or wheels.

Precautions:

  1. Wear protective gloves before operation to avoid the tools scratching your fingers;
  2. If the wheels cannot be removed due to aging, use a hot air blower to heat the connection between the wheels and the frame (to soften the glue or plastic) and then try to pry them;
  3. Keep all the parts (such as the snap ring rod and nuts) after removal for use when installing new wheels.
