Noisy Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 11, 2026

Noisy office chair wheels can be resolved through methods such as clearing debris, lubricating and maintaining, replacing wheels, tightening and inspecting, and adding gaskets.

  1. Clearing debris: Debris getting stuck is a common cause of wheel noise. Turn the chair upside down and carefully inspect the area around the wheels for hair, dust, small stones, and other debris. For tangled hair, use tweezers or a hook to carefully remove it; you can also utilize the principle of static electricity adsorption by rubbing a plastic pen with a cloth to generate static electricity and then using it to attract fine debris like hair.
  2. Lubricating and maintaining: If the wheels still make noise after clearing debris, the bearings may be short of oil. Use a clean cloth to dip a small amount of sewing machine oil, light mechanical lubricating oil, or special maintenance oil, and apply it to the gaps between the wheel axle and the bearings. Then rotate the wheels to evenly distribute the oil, and finally wipe off the excess oil stains. You can also choose a lubricant specifically designed for wheels and drop an appropriate amount onto the axle core and then rotate the wheels.
  3. Replacing wheels: Wheel material aging or severe wear can also cause noise. Cheap hard plastic wheels or aged and hardened rubber wheels are prone to making noise. If the wheel surface has grooves, cracks, etc., you need to replace them with better-quality, compatible silent PU wheels.
  4. Tightening and inspecting: Check if the connection between the five-star base and the casters is loose. You can try pressing to confirm. Also, check if the connections of other parts of the chair (such as the backrest and armrests) are secure. If necessary, use a screwdriver to tighten the screws on the axle core.
  5. Adding gaskets: Adding adhesive paper gaskets between the connection and the hole wall can reduce friction and gaps, thereby reducing noise.

In addition, when purchasing an office chair, you can choose a high-quality chair that conforms to ergonomic design. For example, ergonomic chairs from brands like Sihoo Vito and NetEase Yanxuan, which use silent PU-wrapped wheels, can reduce sliding noise.
