Noise from Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 09, 2026

There are various reasons for the noise produced by office chair wheels, and targeted measures can be taken to resolve them.

One common cause of noise from office chair wheels is poor wheel quality. Low-quality wheels generate significant friction with the ground when sliding, producing loud noises that can even disturb people downstairs in quiet environments. In contrast, high-quality rolling computer chairs use silent materials such as PU-wrapped wheels, which produce minimal noise, even quieter than the sound of walking in slippers.

Wheel squeaking is also a common issue, with sounds like "creaking," "clicking," or friction noises. Common causes include:

  • Accumulation of dust in the universal wheels: Dust builds up inside the wheels, affecting their normal rotation and causing squeaking.
  • Foreign objects stuck in the wheels: Hair, paper scraps, and other foreign objects can get stuck in the wheels, obstructing their rotation and producing noise.
  • Lack of lubrication in the bearings: When bearings lack lubrication, friction increases during rotation, resulting in a creaking sound.
  • Wheel aging: After prolonged use, wheels can wear out and age, leading to reduced performance and noise.

Additionally, loosening of connection points due to prolonged use can increase friction at connection points when the office chair is moved or rotated, producing a creaking sound.

To address these issues, the following solutions can be implemented:

  • Replace the wheels: Switching to silent PU wheels can effectively reduce noise.
  • Deep cleaning: Perform a deep clean of the universal wheels to remove foreign objects like tangled hair and keep the inside of the wheels clean.
  • Lubrication maintenance: If the bearings lack lubrication, use a clean cloth to apply a small amount of sewing machine oil to the gaps between the wheel axles and bearings for lubrication maintenance.
  • Add gaskets: Place rubber gaskets between the connection points and the hole walls to reduce friction and gaps, thereby lowering noise levels.

At the same time, when purchasing a chair, pay attention to quality and choose a chair that is ergonomically designed and has high-quality wheels to reduce the generation of wheel noise from the source.
