Office Chair Wheel Modification
Admin October 09, 2026
Modifying ordinary office chairs with wheels can be achieved by replacing compatible chair wheels or adding mobile auxiliary devices, with the specific solution depending on the chair leg structure. Here are the detailed modification methods and precautions:

I. Core Modification Method: Replacing Chair Wheels with Rollers
This method is suitable for ordinary office chairs with detachable chair legs and should be carried out according to the following steps:
- Confirm Chair Wheel Specifications
- Measure the diameter of the original chair wheel mounting hole, with common specifications being 10mm or 12mm; confirm the thread type (metric or imperial) to avoid installation failure due to mismatched specifications.
- Evaluate load-bearing requirements: ordinary office chairs need to bear 100-150kg, and it is recommended to choose chair wheels with a load-bearing capacity of โฅ120kg to ensure safety during use.
- Purchase Compatible Rollers
- Type Selection: Prioritize chair wheels with universal wheels (360ยฐ rotation) to enhance mobility flexibility.
- Material Recommendations: Nylon material is highly wear-resistant and suitable for hard floors; polyurethane material offers good sound insulation and is suitable for office or home environments; avoid choosing metal wheels as their high hardness can easily scratch solid wood or marble floors.
- Installation Steps
- Flip the chair over and use a wrench or screwdriver to remove the original fixed chair wheels (snap-on chair wheels can be removed by pressing the snap directly).
- Align the new rollers with the mounting holes and tighten them clockwise (snap-on types can be fixed by pressing directly).
- After installation, check that the rollers rotate smoothly and do not loosen under load.
II. Auxiliary Modification Solution: Adding Mobile Auxiliary Devices
If the chair legs are of a one-piece structure (unable to remove chair wheels), the following alternative methods can be used:
- Install a Mobile Tray
- Purchase a universal wheel tray that fits the size of the chair base (usually with 4-5 rollers at the bottom) and place the entire chair on the tray.
- Note: The load-bearing capacity of the tray must be greater than the weight of the chair (including the weight of the person) to avoid deformation or damage during use.
- Attach Silent Roller Stickers
- Attach small rollers with adhesive backing (2-3cm in diameter) to the bottom foot pads of the chair, suitable for lightweight office chairs (recommended load-bearing capacity not exceeding 80kg).
- Limitations: The load-bearing capacity of roller stickers is limited, and they may fall off after long-term use, requiring regular inspection and replacement.
III. Precautions
- Floor Protection: For solid wood or marble floors, choose silent rollers with brake functions to prevent the chair from scratching the floor when sliding.
- Stability Check: After replacing the chair wheels, test the balance of the chair's center of gravity when moving to avoid tipping due to inconsistent roller heights or loose installation.
- Load-Bearing Limit: The load-bearing capacity of the rollers must be greater than the maximum weight the chair will bear (including the weight of the person). Overloading may cause damage to the rollers or deformation of the chair structure.
