Office Chair Wheel Jam

Admin October 22, 2026

The following methods can be adopted to deal with a jammed office chair wheel depending on different situations:

If the wheel is jammed by hair, fibers, etc.

  • Method 1: First, turn the office chair upside down, taking care to protect the chair's fabric. Hold the wheel bracket with your hand and gently pull the wheel outwards. Most office chair wheels are designed with snap-in mechanisms and do not require tools. If the wheel is tightly stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth underneath to gently pry the edge of the snap-in mechanism. After removing the wheel, place all the wheels on a table and inspect them one by one. Use tweezers to remove long hair and carpet fibers from the gaps along the direction of wheel rotation to prevent further entanglement. Then, use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent to gently scrub the surface of the wheel and the gaps in the bearings to remove residual dust and grease. Rinse the wheel with water (avoid getting water into the bearings), dry it with a dry cloth, and let it air dry in a well-ventilated area for 10 minutes. After the wheel is dry, apply 1-2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment to the bearings. Rotate the wheel by hand to evenly distribute the lubricating oil. Then, align the wheel with the bracket's snap-in mechanism and gently push it in until you hear a 'click' sound, confirming that it is securely installed. Finally, turn the office chair back upright and push it to test if the wheels roll smoothly. If there is still stuttering, check for any remaining debris that has not been cleaned.
  • Method 2: Turn the chair upside down. Insert two large flat-head screwdrivers into both sides of the wheel, as close to the axle as possible. Pry the screwdrivers outwards to release the wheel's snap spring. Pull out another wheel with force to remove its axle from the axle sleeve. You can lightly tap the end of the axle with a small hammer to loosen it. After cleaning away hair and other foreign objects, reinstall the wheel into the axle sleeve and press the snap spring in with force. When using a hammer, be gentle to prevent deformation.

If the wheel is jammed for other reasons and does not rotate

  • Check for debris around the wheel: Carefully examine the area around the wheel for any debris such as paper scraps, hair, or threads. If any are found, carefully remove them to see if the wheel can rotate again.
  • Check if the wheel is damaged: If the rubber part of the wheel is severely worn or has cracks, preventing normal rotation, you need to purchase a replacement wheel of the same model that is compatible with your office chair and replace it according to the instructions or an online tutorial.
  • Check the condition of the axle: If the axle of the wheel is loose, tighten the screw. If the axle is rusty, spray it with rust remover, remove the rust, and then apply lubricating oil to reduce friction between the axle and the wheel.
  • Adjust the position of the chair: If the ground is uneven or has too much friction, move the chair to a flatter and smoother surface, such as a wooden floor or a tiled floor.
