Cleaning Hair from Office Chair Wheels
Admin October 11, 2026
Hair getting stuck in office chair wheels can cause resistance when moving, may scratch the floor, and if not cleaned for a long time, can increase the burden on the back and waist, leading to problems such as lumbar muscle strain. The following methods can be used for cleaning:

Simple Methods
- Paperclip Hooking: Turn the chair upside down, bend a paperclip into a small hook, and insert it along the gap of the wheel axle to hook out the surface-entangled hair.
- Floor Sticking: When the floor is still wet after mopping, roll the chair back and forth a couple of times to let the floor stick to the loose hair and debris on the wheels.
- Cover Prying and Hair Cutting: If the hair is tightly wound, use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry open the wheel cover, leaving a 3 - 4mm gap. Insert a box cutter diagonally into the gap to cut the hair, and then use tweezers to pick out the broken hair.
- Direct Wheel Pulling: Those with dexterous hands can directly grasp the root of the wheel and pull it vertically upwards (most office chair wheels are now of a snap-fit design and can be easily removed by pulling). After cleaning, tap the slot twice and the wheel can be reinstalled.
Disassembly Cleaning Method
- Disassembling the Casters: Turn the office chair upside down, hold the caster bracket with your hand, and gently pull out the casters outwards (most are of a snap-fit design and do not require tools). If the casters are stuck tightly, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth underneath to gently pry the edge of the snap-fit.
- Cleaning Debris: Use tweezers to pick out the long hair strands and carpet fibers one by one from the gaps of the casters (pick in the direction of the caster rotation). Then, use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent to gently scrub the surface of the casters and the gaps in the bearings to remove residual dust and oil stains. Finally, rinse the casters with water (avoid getting water into the bearing part), dry them with a dry cloth, and let them air dry in a well-ventilated place for 10 minutes.
- Lubrication and Reinstallation: After the casters are dry, drip 1 - 2 drops of special lubricant for office equipment onto the bearings and rotate the casters by hand to evenly distribute the lubricant. Then, align the casters with the bracket snap-fits and gently push them in until you hear a 'click' sound to confirm they are firmly installed. Finally, turn the office chair upright and push it to test if the casters move smoothly.
Universal Wheel Cleaning Method
- Removing the Universal Wheels: Pull the universal wheels off the swivel chair (if they do not come off directly, wiggle them left and right and they will come off).
- Disassembling the Wheels: Use one pair of needle-nose pliers and the wrist strength of an adult man, or two pairs of needle-nose pliers, insert the pliers into the wheel as a lever to disassemble one side of the wheel.
- Cleaning the Hair: Remove the hair on the connecting rod by hand.
- Reinstalling the Wheels: Put the cleaned wheels back in place.
In addition, it is best to spend 5 minutes cleaning the chair wheels every month. You can also lay a small floor mat in the area where the office chair often stays to reduce the amount of hair and dust getting into the wheel axles.
