Office Chair Wheel Flaking

Admin October 22, 2026

The flaking of office chair wheels is mainly caused by friction and wear between the wheels and the ground, scratching of the ground material, and the mixing of impurities. This issue can be resolved by replacing or cleaning the wheels.

Causes of Flaking

  • Wheel Wear: Wheel materials such as rubber and polyurethane (PU) can experience micro-abrasion of their surface layers due to friction with the ground during frequent rolling, resulting in the formation of fine particles. For example, rubber wheels may exhibit slight surface tackiness or even 'flaking' after prolonged use or oxidation.
  • Ground Material Wear: When hard wheels are moved on surfaces such as painted wooden floors or epoxy flooring, they may scratch off the coating or material powder from the floor surface. Nylon wheels, being hard and highly wear-resistant, are prone to scratching the floor surface, leaving scratches and floor powder.
  • Impurity Mixing: During rolling, wheels can adsorb and mix impurities from the ground, such as dust, dirt, and hair, with their own wear debris, ultimately forming black crumbs.

Solutions

  • Fundamental Solution: Replace the wheels with suitable ones. Different wheel materials have varying degrees of friendliness to the ground, and the choice can be made based on the ground material. Polyurethane (PU) wheels offer good elasticity, wear resistance, and relatively high hardness, making them friendly to hard floors. Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE/TPR) wheels achieve flexible contact with the ground through the softness and elasticity of the material, avoiding hard scratching.
  • Temporary Solution:
    • Clean the Wheels: Disassemble the wheels for deep cleaning. Use a soft-bristled brush in combination with a vacuum cleaner to remove debris from the wheels. Wipe the wheels with a damp cloth and use detergent if necessary.
    • Masking Tape Protection: Wrap the wheels with masking tape. First, clean the wheels and then cut the masking tape to the appropriate size and stick it onto the wheels. This way, dust on the ground will stick to the masking tape instead of falling onto the ground. This method can last for about a month, after which the masking tape can be torn off and replaced with new tape.
