Disassembly and Assembly of Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 12, 2026

The disassembly and assembly of office chair wheels can be carried out according to the following steps:

Preparation

  • Tool Preparation: Most snap-ring type casters can be disassembled by hand, but to be on the safe side, you can prepare a flat-head screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to assist in prying. If the caster is rusted and stuck, you will need lubricant (such as WD - 40). Also, prepare a cloth to clean up dust and wear gloves to prevent hand injuries.
  • Safety Instructions: Do not disassemble the gas cylinder. Simply lay the chair down or flip it over to operate on the caster part. The gas cylinder is filled with high-pressure nitrogen. Hitting it with a hammer, prying it hard with a tool, or attempting to heat it for disassembly may cause gas leakage or even cylinder explosion. Operate on a flat and open ground, clear the items on the chair, and stay away from fire sources and sharp objects. If the gas cylinder of the chair has problems such as failure to lift or lower, or air leakage and abnormal noise, contact professional personnel for maintenance first instead of operating on your own.

Caster Disassembly

  • Observe the Interface Type: The common types are snap-ring type (quick-release type), where there is an elastic metal snap ring at the top of the wheel's insert rod; the other is threaded type (screw-post type), where the wheel has a rotatable metal screw rod.
  • Disassembly According to Different Types: For snap-ring type casters, hold the wheel with your hand, press it vertically downward while pulling it outward, and use the deformation of the snap ring to make it come out of the metal sleeve of the chair leg. If it is difficult to do by hand, you can use the tip of a flat-head screwdriver or an old key to gently press against the inner side of the snap ring from the side gap of the wheel to assist in loosening. For threaded type casters, simply rotate the wheel counterclockwise to unscrew it from the threaded hole of the chair leg base.
  • Overcoming Difficulties: If the caster is rusted or deformed and stuck, do not pull it hard. Spray a small amount of lubricant at the interface between the wheel and the chair leg and wait a few minutes for it to penetrate. Use needle-nose pliers to clamp the root of the wheel axle (as close to the chair as possible), shake it slightly left and right, and try to pull it outward. You can also align the opening of large scissors or needle-nose pliers with the interface, gently pry it up and down, and rotate the wheel counterclockwise while prying.
  • Cleaning Work: After disassembling all the old casters, use a cloth to clean the dust and debris in the installation holes of the chair legs.

Installing New Wheels

Forcefully insert the new wheels into the installation holes of the chair legs. If it doesn't work the first time, try a few more times.
