Disassembly and Assembly of Office Chair Wheels
Admin October 09, 2026
The disassembly and assembly of office chair wheels (casters) should be carried out according to the fixing method, mainly divided into two types: snap-ring wheels and screw-mounted wheels. The specific operations are as follows:

I. Disassembly and Assembly of Snap-Ring Wheels (No Screw Fixing)
Disassembly Steps
- Flip the Chair: Turn the chair upside down, ensuring that the five-star base is facing upwards and placed stably to prevent tipping during operation.
- Secure the Wheel: Use needle-nose pliers to grip the metal bushing or plastic part connecting the top of the wheel to the base of the five-star base, ensuring a tight grip to prevent slipping.
- Pry and Rotate: Using the plastic edge of the five-star base as a fulcrum, pry and rotate the wheel counterclockwise while prying. If the wheel is too tight, repeat the operation or gently tap the side with a rubber mallet to assist in loosening.
- Lubrication Treatment: If the wheel still cannot be removed, drip a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) into the connection and wait for 5-10 minutes before attempting to disassemble again.
Assembly Steps
- Match the Wheel: Select a new wheel of the same size as the original one, ensuring that the hub of the snap-ring wheel matches the axle hole.
- Press to Install: Align the new wheel with the axle hole of the five-star base and press down vertically until the snap ring is fully engaged, indicated by a clicking sound.
II. Disassembly and Assembly of Screw-Mounted Wheels (Screw Fixing)
Disassembly Steps
- Flip the Chair: Similarly, turn the chair upside down and observe whether there is a cross screw in the center of the wheel. If the screw is covered by a plastic cap, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the cap.
- Unscrew the Screw: Use a cross screwdriver to unscrew the screw counterclockwise, keeping the screw for use during installation.
- Pull Out the Wheel: After the screw is removed, pull the wheel straight up. If it is stuck, gently shake it left and right to assist in disassembly, avoiding excessive force that may cause the axle to break.
Assembly Steps
- Match the Wheel: Ensure that the new wheel is the same size as the original one and that the screw holes are aligned.
- Tighten the Screw: Insert the new wheel into the axle hole of the five-star base, insert the screw, and tighten it clockwise to ensure that the wheel is firmly fixed and does not wobble.
III. General Precautions
- Tool Preparation: Before operation, prepare tools such as needle-nose pliers, cross screwdrivers, rubber mallets, and lubricants.
- Foreign Object Removal: If the wheel is stuck, first clean any hair, threads, or other foreign objects from the bearing to avoid damaging the internal structure.
- Avoid Brute Force: Do not pull with brute force during disassembly to prevent the plastic wheel from cracking and leaving metal axles, increasing repair difficulty.
- Safe Operation: Ensure that the ground is flat when flipping the chair to prevent the chair from tipping over and causing personal injury.
If the wheel still cannot be disassembled, try gently tapping the side of the roller with a flat-head screwdriver to loosen it, and then use a hammer to assist in disassembly, but control the force to avoid damaging the parts.
