Disassembly of Office Chair Wheels

Admin October 16, 2026

The method for disassembling office chair wheels depends on the type of wheel. Here are the common types and their corresponding disassembly methods:

Screw-type wheels These wheels are fixed to the chair legs with screws. To disassemble them, use an appropriate screwdriver (such as a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver). Align the screwdriver with the screw at the connection point between the wheel and the chair leg, and rotate the screwdriver clockwise. Once the screw is completely unscrewed, the wheel can be separated from the chair leg. When operating, ensure that the screwdriver is perpendicular to the screw to avoid slipping. If the screw is rusty or stuck, you can first apply a small amount of lubricating oil (such as WD-40) and let it sit for a few minutes before attempting to turn it again.

Pin-type wheels Pin-type wheels are fixed by inserting a metal pin into a hole in the chair leg. The difficulty of disassembly varies depending on how tightly they are installed. There are three common methods:

  1. Direct pulling: Hold both sides of the wheel with your hands and pull it upward evenly. If the wheel is loose or has been installed for a short time, it can be pulled out directly.
  2. Tool-assisted prying: If it cannot be pulled out directly, insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the wheel and the chair leg and pry slowly along the edge of the wheel to loosen the metal pin from the hole in the chair leg. Alternatively, use needle-nose pliers to grip the edge of the wheel, rotate it slightly, and pull it upward.
  3. Tapping method: Use a flat-blade screwdriver to lightly tap the side of the wheel to create a gap between it and the chair leg. Then, switch to a hammer (or rubber mallet) to lightly tap the top of the wheel, using the vibration to gradually dislodge the metal pin. If the pin is stuck too tightly, you can use pliers to grip the end of the pin and tap the handle of the pliers with a hammer, using the principle of leverage to increase the pulling force.

Precautions

  • Before disassembly, it is recommended to invert or lay the chair flat to prevent the wheel from suddenly falling off and causing damage to the chair leg or injury to personnel.
  • When using metal tools, control the force to avoid scratching the surface of the chair leg or damaging the internal structure of the wheel.
  • If the wheel still cannot be disassembled, it may be fixed by an internal snap spring or plastic clip. Further observe the structure of the wheel or consult the manufacturer's instructions to avoid forced destruction.
