Office Chair Wheel Disassembly

Admin October 10, 2026

The disassembly of office chair wheels can be carried out according to the following steps, and the corresponding method should be selected according to the wheel type:

1. Disassembly of Snap-on Casters

Snap-on casters are the most common type on office chairs. Their brackets are fixed to the wheels through a snap-on structure, and no special tools are required for disassembly. Operating Steps:

  1. Flip the Chair: Turn the office chair upside down (with the seat facing downwards). Ensure that the seat fabric is isolated from the ground. You can place a soft cloth or foam board underneath to prevent scratches.
  2. Pull Out the Casters: Hold both sides of the caster bracket with your hands and pull it out evenly and forcefully. If the caster is stuck, you can use a flat-head screwdriver for assistance: Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the gap at the edge of the snap-on part and gently pry it open (be sure to place a soft cloth underneath to protect the surface of the bracket). Once the snap-on part is loose, try pulling it out again.
  3. Check the Snap-on Part: If the caster still cannot be pulled out, it may be due to deformation of the snap-on part or increased friction caused by dust accumulation. You can spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) and repeat the operation.

2. Disassembly of Casters with Snap Springs

Some office chair wheels are fixed with snap springs and require tools to pry open the snap springs for disassembly. Operating Steps:

  1. Locate the Snap Spring: Observe the connection between the wheel and the bracket and find the snap spring rod (usually a thin metal rod embedded in the bracket hole).
  2. Pry Open the Snap Spring: Use a flat-head tool (such as a screwdriver or a special snap spring plier). Insert the tip of the tool into the gap between the snap spring and the bracket and pry it open forcefully outwards (a significant amount of force is required. It is recommended that a male perform the operation or use the principle of leverage).
  3. Remove the Wheel: Once the snap spring is loose, the wheel can be freely pulled out. If the snap spring breaks, use needle-nose pliers to clamp out the remaining part.

3. Disassembly of Threaded Wheels

Threaded wheels are connected to the bracket through threads and require a wrench for rotation and disassembly. Operating Steps:

  1. Fix the Bracket: Turn the chair upside down and hold the bracket steady with one hand to prevent the entire chair from moving during rotation.
  2. Rotate the Wheel: Use a small wrench (or an adjustable wrench) to grip the threaded part of the wheel and turn it to the left (counterclockwise). If the threads are rusty, spray lubricant and wait for 5 minutes before operating.
  3. Clean the Threads: After disassembly, check if the threads are damaged. If there are burrs, you can lightly file them with a file.

Precautions:

  • Avoid applying excessive force during disassembly to prevent deformation of the bracket.
  • Keep all small parts (such as snap springs and screws) for subsequent installation.
  • If the bearings inside the wheel are damaged, replace the bearings separately or replace the entire wheel.
