Office Chair Wheel Broken

Admin October 16, 2026

If the wheel of an office chair is broken, the following measures can be taken to resolve the issue:

I. Replace with the Same Model of Casters If the wheel is completely damaged or cannot be repaired, all the casters can be removed and replaced with new ones of the same model purchased from an e-commerce platform or a local hardware store. When installing, ensure that the direction of the wheels is consistent with their original positions to avoid improper use due to incorrect installation. This method is suitable for cases where the main body of the wheel is broken or severely worn, with low cost and simple operation.

II. Weld and Repair Cracked Wheels If the wheel is only cracked rather than completely broken, a professional welder can be contacted to repair the cracked part by welding. Before welding, clean the dirt on the surface of the wheel to ensure a flat welding surface; after welding, check whether the wheel rotates smoothly to avoid affecting use due to welding deformation. This method is suitable for metal wheels, but note that the welding strength may be lower than that of the original wheel, and there may be a risk of cracking again after long-term use.

III. Replace the Wheels Yourself

  1. Identify the Wheel Style: Common wheels are divided into snap-ring types and threaded types. The connection part of a snap-ring wheel is round and fixed with a snap ring; the connection part of a threaded wheel is hexagonal and tightened with threads.
  2. Remove the Old Wheels: For snap-ring wheels, gently pry off the snap ring with a screwdriver and then remove the old wheel; for threaded wheels, use a wrench to unscrew the old wheel, keeping the wrench perpendicular to the wheel to avoid slipping.
  3. Install the New Wheels: For snap-ring wheels, insert the new wheel into the slot with force and ensure the snap ring is reset; for threaded wheels, screw the new wheel into the threaded hole and tighten it with a wrench to an appropriate degree to avoid difficulty in rotation due to over-tightening.
  4. Check Stability: After installation, check whether the wheels rotate smoothly without jamming or abnormal noise to ensure the chair moves steadily.

IV. Comprehensive Inspection and Replacement If the wheel damage is accompanied by other problems (such as loose screws or poor sliding of the base), prepare tools such as a wrench, screwdriver, and rubber mallet for a comprehensive inspection:

  1. Use a wrench to unscrew the damaged wheel and check whether the fixing screws are loose. If they are, tighten them;
  2. If the screws are tight but the wheel still does not slide smoothly, gently tap the base of the wheel with a rubber mallet to adjust it to slide smoothly;
  3. If the wheel is old or severely damaged, directly replace it with a new set of casters to ensure the overall stability of the chair.

Precautions: Avoid using excessive force during the operation to prevent damage to other parts of the chair. If you are not familiar with disassembly and installation, it is recommended to seek the help of professionals.
