Office Chair Wheel Breakage

Admin October 22, 2026

If the wheels of an office chair break, follow these steps:

Step 1: Check the wheel status Place the chair upright and observe whether each wheel foot makes even contact with the ground. If there is a tilt, it may be due to uneven force caused by wheel breakage or wear. Then, invert the chair and check the wheel feet for obvious signs of damage, such as bending, breakage, or cracks. Common causes of caster breakage include wear and tear from long-term use, uneven weight distribution (e.g., excessive load on one side), manufacturing defects, or material aging. If only some of the wheels are damaged, confirm whether there are potential risks with the other wheels.

Step 2: Replace the wheels

  1. Purchase matching wheels: Since it is difficult to buy a single wheel foot separately, it is recommended to buy a complete set of new wheels. There are two ways to obtain them:
    • Contact the chair manufacturer and provide the chair model or wheel specifications (such as axle diameter, length, and shape) to order original accessories.
    • After removing the old wheels, take one of them to an office supplies store or hardware store to match universal wheels with the same axle size (e.g., 6mm or 8mm in diameter) and shape (such as round or square).
  2. Remove the old wheels:
    • If the wheels are directly inserted into the base sockets, try to pull them out vertically. If they are stuck, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the small gap between the wheel foot and the chair's contact point and use it as a lever to pry slowly.
    • If the wheels are fixed with screws, use a screwdriver of the corresponding size to loosen the screws and then remove them. Avoid applying excessive force during the operation to prevent damage to the base.

Step 3: Install the new wheels

  1. Lubricate the base sockets: Apply a small amount of spray lubricant (such as WD-40) or a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly inside each wheel socket of the chair base to reduce installation resistance and prevent rust.
  2. Tap in the new wheels: Align the axle of the new wheel with the base socket and gently push it in by hand until it is initially seated. If it is not fully in place, use a rubber mallet (avoid a metal hammer) to gently tap the root of the axle (near the base) to ensure that the wheel is inserted vertically and there is no risk of deformation. Control the force when tapping to avoid axle breakage or base cracking.

Step 4: Test the stability Invert the chair to simulate normal use, sit on it, and move slowly to check whether the wheels roll smoothly and without abnormal noise. Observe whether the chair tilts to one side to ensure that all wheels are evenly stressed. If there is still wobbling, recheck whether the wheels are installed properly or whether the base is damaged.

Additional suggestion: If self-repair is difficult, you can contact professional repair services. For example, Shanghai Zhuanye Industrial Co., Ltd. provides office chair repair services, including caster replacement and base repair, which can save time and ensure repair quality.
