Black Spots on Office Chair Wheels
Admin October 12, 2026
Black spots on office chair wheels mainly stem from friction and wear between the wheels and the ground, the mixing of impurities, and issues with the wheel bearings or bushings, etc. They can be resolved through cleaning and prevention.

Cleaning Methods
- Deep cleaning by disassembling the wheels: If debris is embedded in the wheel axle gaps, lay the chair down, use pliers or scissors to pry open the connection between the wheel and the chair leg, remove the wheel, and thoroughly clean the hair and dust stuck inside the wheel axle.
- Combination of a soft-bristled brush and a vacuum cleaner: Use a soft-bristled brush to remove the floating dust on the wheel surface and axle center, and use a vacuum cleaner to suck away the debris. If there is no vacuum cleaner, you can rub a plastic straw or plastic rod on a cloth to generate static electricity and adsorb fine powder.
- Wiping with a damp cloth and detergent: Lay the chair horizontally, wrap the wheel with a slightly damp soft cloth, and rotate and wipe it repeatedly to soften and remove stubborn stains. If there is oily dirt on the surface, dip a small amount of neutral detergent for cleaning, and then wipe it clean with a damp cloth soaked in clean water. Never use strong acid or strong alkali cleaners to avoid corroding the wheel material.
- Dealing with stuttering issues: After cleaning, if the wheels still feel stuttery when rotating, you can drip 1 - 2 drops of sewing machine oil or special lubricating oil at the connection of the wheel axle, rotate the wheels to make the oil penetrate evenly, and be careful not to use too much oil.
- Cleaning black marks: For black marks that have just formed and are relatively light in color, first wipe them directly with an eraser. If the effect is not obvious, soak a nano sponge in water, wring it out, and wipe repeatedly. You can also use a vacuum cleaner to suck away the floating dust on the surface of the black marks before wiping. You can also use chemical cleaners. For example, dissolve soap in warm water and pour it on the black marks. After waiting for a while, scrub with a brush or cloth. Alcohol can dissolve rubber-based stains, so you can soak a cloth in alcohol and gently wipe the surface of the marks.
Prevention Methods
- Replace with suitable wheels: Choose according to the ground material. For example, high-quality PU wheels are friendly to hard ground, less likely to leave scratches, and have slow self-wear. Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE/TPR) wheels achieve flexible contact with the ground through material properties, reduce noise, and effectively buffer to avoid hard scraping.
- Add additional protective items: Place transparent rubber pads or carpets in the chair area to reduce direct friction and damage between the wheels and the ground.
