Office Chair Wet and Smelly

Admin October 12, 2026

If an office chair gets wet and develops an odor, it can be resolved through quick emergency odor removal or deep cleaning and deodorization. Here are the specific methods:

Quick Emergency Odor Removal Methods (Effective on the same day)

  • Powerful Ventilation: Move the chair to a well-ventilated location such as a balcony or near a window. Open all doors and windows to create air convection and accelerate the evaporation of odor molecules. If the weather is good, chairs made of fabric or mesh can be briefly exposed to sunlight (avoid prolonged exposure to prevent damage), using the ultraviolet rays in sunlight to inhibit mold growth.
  • Activated Carbon/Bamboo Charcoal Adsorption: Place activated carbon packs or bamboo charcoal packs around, beneath, or on the seat of the chair. Their well-developed porous structures can effectively adsorb odor molecules, formaldehyde, and moisture in the air. It is recommended to replace the adsorbent material every 2-3 hours to maintain effectiveness.
  • White Vinegar Solution Wiping: Dilute white vinegar or rice vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. Dip a soft towel into the solution, wring it out until it is semi-dry, and wipe the surface of the seat (avoid allowing liquid to seep into the interior). Acetic acid can neutralize alkaline odors and inhibit bacteria. After wiping, use a clean towel dampened with water to wipe again and open windows for ventilation until there is no residual vinegar smell.
  • Using Professional Odor Removers: Choose car interior odor removal sprays or fabric disinfectant and deodorizers, prioritizing products that contain ingredients to decompose odor molecules. Before use, test a small area on an inconspicuous part of the chair to ensure there is no damage or staining, and then spray on the odor-affected area according to the instructions.

Complete Steps for Deep Cleaning and Deodorization (For stubborn odors or obvious stains and mildew spots)

  • Preparation: Prepare a vacuum cleaner, a soft-bristled brush, clean towels, and cleaning agents (such as specialized fabric cleaners, neutral laundry detergents, or soapy water). If the mildew spots are severe, prepare additional mildew removers or strong cleaners.
  • Thorough Vacuuming: Use a vacuum cleaner to comprehensively clean dust, hair, and debris from the seat, backrest, armrests, and crevices and folds. For mesh chairs, gently pat the edges to shake out dust from the seams to prevent residues from obstructing subsequent cleaning.
  • Cleaning Stains and Mildew Spots: For ordinary stains, wipe with diluted cleaning solution or soapy water that has been wrung out; for mildew spots or stubborn stains, spray mildew removers or strong cleaners, gently brush with a soft-bristled brush, and let it sit for half an hour to allow the cleaner to fully decompose the mildew spots.
  • Removing Residues and Drying: Wipe off cleaning agent residues with clean water to prevent secondary pollution. Place the chair in a well-ventilated area to dry thoroughly. If necessary, use the cold air setting of a hairdryer to assist (keep a distance of more than 30 cm) to avoid high-temperature damage to the material.
