Washability of Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Whether an office chair can be washed depends on its material. Most materials cannot be directly washed and require targeted cleaning and maintenance. Different materials of office chairs have varying physical properties, resulting in different tolerances to washing. Incorrect cleaning methods can lead to cracking, deformation, shrinkage, or material damage. Here are cleaning suggestions for specific materials:

Genuine Leather Office Chairs: Do not wash directly. Genuine leather has natural pores on its surface. Washing can cause water to penetrate inside, damaging the leather fiber structure and leading to cracking, deformation, or fading. When cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe away surface dust. If there are stains, use a dedicated leather cleaner with a cotton cloth to wipe along the grain. After cleaning, apply leather conditioner to maintain shine.

Mesh Office Chairs: Can be partially washed but with caution. Mesh material has good breathability, but prolonged soaking or exposure to sunlight can reduce its elasticity. When cleaning, dilute a neutral detergent and use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the stained area. After scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with clean water to avoid detergent residue. After cleaning, use a dry towel to absorb moisture and place it in a well-ventilated area to dry in the shade. Do not expose to sunlight or dry with high heat, as this may accelerate mesh aging.

PU Material Office Chairs: It is generally not recommended to wash the entire chair. PU (polyurethane) material has a surface similar to leather but is less water-resistant. Washing can cause the surface coating to peel off or become sticky. When cleaning, use a damp towel to wipe the armrests, backrest, and other areas. For stubborn stains, spray a small amount of leather cleaner and use a soft cloth to wipe in a circular motion before drying. Regular use of leather brightener for maintenance can extend the lifespan.

Suede Office Chairs: Do not rinse with a large amount of water. Suede material is highly absorbent. Washing can cause the fibers to shrink, harden, or even develop watermarks or fading. When cleaning, first use a vacuum cleaner to remove surface dust. For stained areas, use a soft cloth dipped in diluted neutral cleaner (such as a 1:10 mixture of laundry detergent and water) to gently wipe. After cleaning, use a dry towel to absorb moisture and must dry in a well-ventilated area to prevent mold growth in humid environments.

General Advice: Most computer chairs contain metal parts (such as five-star bases and gas lifts). Direct washing can lead to rusting or disassembly. Wooden parts can swell and deform when exposed to water. When cleaning, it is recommended to choose a diluted neutral detergent for partial wiping according to the material. After cleaning, dry thoroughly and avoid direct sunlight or high-temperature environments. Regularly use a vacuum cleaner to clean dust from crevices, which can reduce the frequency of deep cleaning.
