Office Chair Unit Usage

Admin October 19, 2026

The units commonly used for office chairs are 'ba' (a Chinese measure word) or 'ge' (a general measure word).

In daily life and office settings, when we need to describe the quantity of office chairs, the most commonly used unit is 'ba'. For example, we might say, 'There are ten office chairs in this office.' Here, 'ba' as a measure word vividly describes the number of office chairs, which are pieces of furniture that can be sat on. This usage originates from the general choice of measure words in Chinese for items with similar shapes or functions. 'Ba' is often used to describe items with handles or similar structures. Although the handle is not the main feature of an office chair, 'ba' as a measure word has been widely accepted and used when describing chair-type furniture.

Additionally, 'ge' is also a general measure word that can be used to describe various independent objects, including office chairs. In less formal settings or when emphasizing individuality, we might say, 'There is a new office chair placed in this office.' Although 'ge' is more widely used, 'ba' remains more common and specialized when describing office chairs.

It is worth noting that in specific industries or fields, there may be more professional units or terms to describe the quantity or specifications of office chairs. For example, in procurement or inventory management, 'tao' (a set) may be used to describe a group of matching office furniture, including office chairs and desks. However, in most cases, when we discuss the quantity of office chairs separately, 'ba' remains the most commonly used unit.

Furthermore, if office chairs are purchased or sold in bulk, measure words such as 'pi' (a batch) or 'jian' (a piece) may be used to describe their quantity. However, these measure words are more commonly used to describe quantities in transaction or logistics contexts, rather than in daily usage descriptions.
