Office Chair Type Furniture
Office chairs are chairs equipped for the convenience of work in daily work and social activities, with various types, development histories, quality and safety issues, and installation features.

Types
OfficeMate categorizes office chairs into narrow and broad definitions. The narrow definition refers to backrest chairs used when performing desk work in a sitting position; the broad definition encompasses all chairs used in offices, including executive chairs and staff chairs. Office swivel chairs are office seating equipped with rotation and height adjustment functions, belonging to the category of office supplies, and include series such as executive chairs, mid-back chairs, and staff chairs. Among them, executive chairs feature a high-back structure and come standard with armrests, while staff chairs have a low-back design without armrests.
Development History
The earliest prototype of an office chair can be traced back to the forward-tilting wooden chairs of ancient Egypt around 1900 BC. In 1849, Thomas Warren invented and produced the first truly modern office chair in history, featuring rotation, sliding, and an elastic cushioned seat. Since 2000, China's office chair industry has developed through the OEM model, with Anji County in Zhejiang Province becoming a global production base. In 2024, China's office chair production reached 177 million units, with exports of 84.64 million units. The industry is showing a trend towards intelligence, with some products integrating pressure sensors, health monitoring, and APP control functions. The market size for hydraulic lift swivel chairs is expected to exceed 16 billion yuan by 2025.
Quality and Safety
Quality and safety issues with office chairs cannot be ignored. On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada issued a recall for office chairs made in China due to the risk of the backrest breaking, posing a falling hazard. Twelve reports had been received, including ten injuries. On September 30, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation's national supervision and inspection of office chairs found that 15 batches of products were unqualified, with stability issues being prominent. On January 16, 2025, the United States issued a recall for WorkPro Momentum office chairs made in China due to the risk of bolt failure, posing a falling hazard. Seven reports had been received, including two minor injuries.
Installation Features
Some office chairs are relatively easy to install. For example, the 1033A office chair can be installed by following video instructions, using screws. Place screw J into the washer, insert it, and then secure it with screw L. Installing the armrests requires screw K. There are also office chairs like the Qingxian office chair, which are ready to use upon installation and can be adjusted easily without much effort. No matter which gear the backrest is tilted back to, it fits snugly against the waist.
